Meet Crystal Whitmarsh

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Crystal Whitmarsh. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Crystal, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

Resiliency. The American Psychological Association describes resilience as: “the process and outcome of successfully adapting to difficult or challenging life experiences, especially through mental, emotional, and behavioral flexibility and adjustment to external and internal demands.”

This definition resonates with me as it seems like a common theme throughout my life. At the age of 9, I came home to find out my parents were getting a divorce. From then on, I felt like I was constantly having to shift and alter my footing in order to stay upright. In fact, I’ve learned because of that, I find myself constantly desiring to grow and change. This is true of entrepreneurship as well. There are so many hills and valleys, and times of wanting to give up and be done with the struggle.

But with each challenge, comes new ways to pivot and new opportunities. I’ve learned over the years to accept closed doors and find the windows.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I own and operate a small, performance based physical therapy practice in Kasson, MN, WHW Physical Therapy. Our mission is to provide training, education, and empowerment to the community, promoting and engaging a whole-person approach to health and wellness physical therapy.

WHW is built on the foundation of valuing family and ensuring that work-life priorities align with what truly matters. Just as WHW helps patients regain their mobility and strength to fully engage in life, WHW operates with the same philosophy within the business.

The clinic was created with the goal of giving both clients and employees the flexibility and autonomy to live a life that prioritizes family, wellness, and balance. Whether it’s blocking time to attend a child’s school event or ensuring that therapists are not overworked and burnt out, WHW leads by example in creating an environment where professional success does not come at the expense of personal fulfillment.

This belief is embedded in every patient interaction, helping clients not just recover but regain the ability to be fully present for the people and experiences that mean the most to them.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Faith, a growth mindset, and perspective have been the most impactful qualities in my journey.

For those early in their journey, here’s how to develop and improve these qualities:

Faith: Trust that God already has a plan and knows the outcome, and that all things will work out in the end. Knowing that closed doors will lead to other opportunities, that will be better than before.

Growth Mindset: Embrace challenges as opportunities to learn and grow. Reframe setbacks as learning experiences, not failures. Actively seek feedback and be open to constructive criticism. Celebrate the progress you make, no matter how small.

Perspective: Regularly step back to view situations from different angles. Practice empathy and try to understand other people’s viewpoints. Consider the long-term implications of decisions and actions. Engage in activities that broaden your horizons and challenge your existing perspectives.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?

Surrounding myself with like-minded entrepreneurs who are either going through similar situations or have been through them already encourages me to keep going. I’ve utilized a few different coaching groups – one specific to physical therapy practices, one specific for leaders, and one designed for personal growth. All of these groups held me accountable and challenged me to keep going when times get tough. Entrepreneurship can be lonely, so recognizing that you aren’t alone, others have been where you are, and have come out on the other side is extremely comforting.
