Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Emily Dray. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Emily, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
Growing up, confidence didn’t come naturally. I was very shy and had low self-esteem. It wasn’t until around middle school that I started gaining confidence. What helped was my friends hyping me up and doing activities I loved and was good at. Surround yourself with good people who care about their future and it will open many doors for you.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a music artist, actress, and editor. I love creating stories and being a part of all aspects of video production. My true passion is acting, stepping into another character, and exploring life through a different lens. I love theatre and watching movies, but every time I step on stage or set, I am the happiest. I moved out to LA to pursue this goal. I started editing in high school. I did AMVs, (anime music videos) which turned into editing real music videos. I’ve edited all types of content: short films, commercials that aired, youtube videos, and TikToks. I love having the control of editing a video and being proud of it at the end of hours of work. Currently, I’m working on new music. While I normally rap, I’ve been trying to figure out my niche. I have some songs I sing that will be coming out soon, but I can’t leave rap behind either. Be on the lookout for new music, maybe an EP with about five songs on it. I took a little break, but I’m ready to get back into my passions in life.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Grit 2. Adaptability 3. Audacity
To be successful, you need resilience because you’re not going to get it right the first time. Anything worth achieving or attaining will be difficult, but it will attainable if you never give up. Many people will tell you “no” so ask the next person and the next till you find someone who will say yes. That is grit.
Life is not predictable, so you need to constantly adapt to stay on top. Staying the same, or being in your comfort zone will not excel you in life. You need to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. For example, I was scarred to take a Karate class, but I wanted to learn self-defense. I went in there and made lots of friends and learned new skills, but I was scarred sitting in my car before class.
Audacity is used negatively but it really means being bold. Have the audacity to start your own business, make your first song, or start a new hobby. Be bold, you will be rewarded.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m always open to collaborating with new people or mutuals that I haven’t talked to in awhile. Collaboration is what makes many creative projects amazing and dynamic. Don’t be shy if you want to create a song together or an edit. Big or small I don’t look at followers to see if I want a collab. What I look for is a quality person, who brings there all and is serious about making music or making content.
