Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jefferson Noël. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jefferson, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I get my resilience from a mix of my personal journey and the incredible examples set by my family. Growing up Haitian-American in Miami, I saw firsthand the sacrifices my parents made—my father’s courage and my mother’s relentless work ethic. Every challenge, from battling severe eczema to coping with loss, taught me that vulnerability isn’t weakness; it’s the raw material for strength. I’ve also learned that every setback, like dropping out of college or facing a failed business, was just a stepping stone. Embracing those experiences and letting them shape me, rather than define me, has allowed me to build resilience that fuels both my personal and professional life.
Beyond my own experiences, I draw strength from the communities I serve. Whether it’s through my work with Barbershop Speaks or mentoring the next generation of leaders, I see resilience every day in the stories of others. Hearing how young people overcome their own struggles reminds me that we’re all in this together, and that our collective determination can spark incredible change. This sense of shared purpose and community has been a constant source of inspiration, reinforcing my belief that resilience isn’t just an individual trait—it’s something we build together, one story at a time.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a storyteller, educator, and community leader whose work spans academia, public speaking, and grassroots empowerment. My journey—from the vibrant conversations in barbershops to the lecture halls of universities—embodies different parts of me. Through every endeavor, I challenge others to embrace our vulnerabilities and turn them into powerful catalysts for change.
Barbershop Speaks is more than an organization—it’s a movement dedicated to sparking meaningful conversations in “overlooked” places. We challenge traditional spaces and empower communities to share their stories, exchange ideas, and bridge generational and cultural divides. In addition to our dynamic dialogues, we host our own television show, install bookshelves in barbershops, organize literacy days for kids, and often provide free haircuts for underprivileged youth. Our multifaceted approach not only elevates community engagement but also creates tangible opportunities for learning and growth.
I am a college dropout turned university professor at a pre-eminent research institution, where I proudly teach in the School of Communication. My journey from overcoming personal challenges to stepping into the classroom at Florida International University is a testament to the transformative power of education. I firmly believe that every setback can lead to a breakthrough, and I continuously work to ignite curiosity and resilience in my students. My teaching philosophy emphasizes real-world application, critical thinking, diversity of thought, and staying true to one’s potential even when the odds are stacked against you.
My public speaking is a unique blend at the intersection of educational, entertaining, and empowering—a dynamic mix that transforms audiences and creates lasting impact. I craft my talks with passion, weaving personal anecdotes, rigorous insights, and humor to leave my audiences not only enlightened but also inspired to take action. My presentations are tailored to resonate with diverse groups, ensuring that every speech becomes an unforgettable experience. I speak on leadership, communications, and personal development—delivering keynotes, trainings, workshops, moderating panels, emceeing events, and more. You can book me for speaking engagements at jeffnoelspeaks.com.
I’m also excited to share that I’m writing my fifth book—a deeply personal exploration detailing a tumultuous five-month journey marked by the devastating news of my father’s stage 4 cancer diagnosis and the bittersweet moment of receiving a congratulatory email for being approved to give a TEDx talk, a milestone I had long pursued. This book takes readers behind the scenes of how I navigated immense grief, transformed pain into purpose, and discovered practical strategies for persevering through crisis, all while learning to keep moving forward when life feels unbearable.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, I’d say the three most impactful qualities in my journey have been resilience, authenticity, and effective communication. Resilience has allowed me to navigate setbacks—from personal losses to professional challenges—with the understanding that every hurdle is an opportunity to grow. Authenticity, or the courage to be vulnerable, has enabled me to connect deeply with others, turning my struggles into shared strength. And effective communication has been the bridge that has transformed personal experiences into powerful, inspirational messages.
For those just starting out, my advice is to embrace your failures as part of the process—each one is a lesson in disguise. Cultivate authenticity by being honest with yourself and others, even when it feels uncomfortable, because genuine connections fuel growth. Finally, work on your communication skills by practicing public speaking, writing, or even casual conversations; every opportunity to share your story builds the clarity and confidence needed to make a lasting impact.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client is an organization or event planner looking for a national speaker who can truly adapt and deliver a tailored, dynamic experience for any audience. Whether it’s a corporate conference, an educational seminar, or a community event, I bring a flexible approach that transforms any theme or message into an engaging, unforgettable performance.
I thrive on working with clients who value originality and impact—those who aren’t satisfied with generic content but want a speaker who can wow audiences and leave them inspired. If you’re seeking a partner who consistently earns repeat invitations for his ability to connect, energize, and deliver customized, transformational experiences, then we’re a perfect match.
