Meet Alice Hamilton

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alice Hamilton a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Alice, you’ve got such an interesting story, but before we jump into that, let’s first talk about a topic near and dear to us – generosity. We think success, happiness and wellbeing depends on authentic generosity and empathy and so we’d love to hear about how you become such a generous person – where do you think your generosity comes from?

My generosity comes from a love of helping others. If you can’t make your own dreams come true, the next best thing is helping others realize their dreams. As a young girl I knew my dreams would not come true without a miracle. Divine intervention. An angel. But angels don’t walk down the street handing out money. If I wanted to live in that world, I had to be generous one. Maybe I could inspire others, but the joy I feel is reward enough.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I am a stand up comedian focused on calling out rampant misogyny in the comedy community. I am currently finding raising for a web series coming this year! And a new podcast called Outside the Club where I poke fun at club comics.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

If I could say empathy three times I would. I developed empathy by growing up in a day care and learning how to make a baby trust me when they’re too young to understand my words. I don’t care how smart you are if you’re also cruel. Glib indifference and shock value have taken over stand up comedy. It’s like no one remembers that Robin Williams was an icon because of his huge, open, bleeding heart. Artist or scientist, no matter your profession, empathy will make you BETTER at it. Empathy will prevent you from being out of touch with reality.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?

We live in a capitalist hellscape. The obstacle every starving artist faces is money. Recently three families I nannied for lost their homes in the California fires. All because we give LAPD so much more money than the LAFD. But my lost employment is nothing next to what those families lost. That perspective has kept me grateful and motivated. In order to resolve the artist’s eternal struggle I am determined to enjoy the journey. Even if I can’t control the destination
