Meet Dr. Irma “elisheva” Diaz

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dr. Irma “elisheva” Diaz a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Irma “Elisheva”, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

When one refers to purpose in life I have found that people automatically refer to purpose as if there is only one.
But I have learned that our purpose in life is plural. I have also learned that purpose is not something we seek—it is something we reveal. It is woven into the very fabric of our being, waiting to emerge as we walk the path of life with intention and awareness. One does not find their purpose by standing still, or contemplating its nature and watching others achieve theirs; rather, purpose is discovered in the act of living it. I found mine by following my passions in life.

There are different kinds of passion, each a spark of something greater, and one is truly fortunate when they recognize all of them. It does not happen all at once. One must be present in all they do whether it is carrying for your children, your parents, loving family, loving what your work accomplishes and simply adding to all of it the gift of gratitude.

I learned early in life from my parents and later from my beautiful children now adults and grandchildren that life is not confined to a single calling—just as light refracts into infinite colors, our purpose manifests in different ways. It is expressed in our roles with loved ones, in our work, and most intimately, in our relationship with ourselves.

The key is alignment—when we attune ourselves to the deeper currents of who we are meant to be, the path unfolds. Every challenge refines us, every connection reveals another layer, and every moment lived with sincerity brings us closer to what was always within us. Purpose is not a destination but a constant becoming, and when we embrace it fully, life flows with meaning, depth, and divine harmony. I am much more than a person with one passion and purpose but I am a person that was created to fulfill purpose and to enjoy my days in my passions and for this, for my family and for my faith, I am grateful.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

The three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in my journey were:

Resilience and Adaptability – Life’s journey is never linear, and unexpected challenges are inevitable. The ability to bounce back from setbacks, pivot when necessary, and continue moving forward despite obstacles has been crucial.
Advice: Cultivate resilience by embracing discomfort and learning from failure. Surround yourself with mentors and a supportive community who encourage growth. Keep an open mind and be willing to adapt when circumstances change. I attribute much of this all to my family and faith.

Strategic Communication and Relationship Building – Success in any field is deeply tied to the ability to communicate effectively, connect with others, and build meaningful relationships. Whether it’s in leadership, advocacy, or personal growth, relationships drive opportunities.
Advice: Practice active listening and learn to articulate your ideas clearly. Invest in networking and mentorship. Seek opportunities to speak publicly, whether through teaching, facilitating discussions, or storytelling, as this will sharpen your ability to connect with diverse audiences.

Commitment to Lifelong Learning and Purpose-Driven Work – Passion without knowledge lacks direction, and knowledge without purpose lacks meaning. The continuous pursuit of learning, paired with a deep sense of purpose, creates a lasting impact.
Advice: Identify what truly moves you and seek knowledge in that area. Read widely, ask questions, and find ways to apply your learning through real-world experiences. Engage in service or work that aligns with your values, as this will sustain your motivation even in challenging times.

For those just starting off on the journey of life, my biggest encouragement is: Be patient, be curious, and take action. Never compare yourself to anyone. You are unique and you are a gift to the universe. Growth doesn’t happen overnight, but each step—no matter how small—builds the foundation for a meaningful and impactful path. May you stir with passion and step into your purpose(s) in life and may you always walk in gratitude.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?

The people who have been most helpful in my journey—both in overcoming challenges and in developing the essential skills, qualities, and knowledge for success—are first and foremost my children and grandchildren. They have been my greatest teachers in resilience, patience, and unconditional love. Watching them grow and navigate life has given me invaluable perspective, reinforcing my commitment to making a meaningful impact in the world. Their presence reminds me daily of the importance of legacy, compassion, and staying true to my values.

Beyond my family, I have been blessed with close friends and mentors who have guided me through pivotal moments in my career and personal growth. Their wisdom, encouragement, and belief in my abilities have been instrumental in shaping the leader I am today. Whether through moments of challenge or celebration, they have provided the kind of support that has strengthened my confidence and deepened my understanding of leadership, advocacy, and service.

Professionally, mentors like Congresswoman Grace Napolitano and leaders in the fields of healthcare, interfaith work, and nonprofit development have played a critical role in refining my strategic thinking, policy expertise, and ability to build bridges across diverse communities. Their mentorship has not only expanded my knowledge but has also inspired me to mentor others in return, ensuring that the cycle of growth and empowerment continues.
