Meet Q

We recently connected with Q and have shared our conversation below.

Q, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

My resilience comes from how I was raised and the many hardships I’ve endured in life. To be specific about a time that my resilience was on full display was when I was homeless sleeping in my car for two months. Despite not having a home, I was able to maintain a routine that eventually landed me in an apartment. Not having any help can be frustrating, but while being at my lowest I always told myself “just keep going”, this was and still how I coach myself to continue to progress despite the situation or obstacles in front of me. I think about the sacrifices my predecessors in my family endured to even give me the opportunities I currently have now and that thought alone makes me want to take advantage of every opportunity presented to me. When I think of the strength and determination of my Great Grandmother Equilla Johnson, I feel like it’s my duty to go hard or to continue expanding everything she built and stood for. as human being that walked this earth, and “turned nothing into something”.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

What I tell people in a joking manner is that I survive for a living. At this point of my life I’m stepping into a new chapter of thriving, but in all seriousness I make music. Am I fully financially sufficient off of my music? No, but I have invested in my craft and been in pursuit to becoming an artist by profession for 4 years going on 5 now. As an artist I go by QUELLTHATHITTA, and I’ve recently released an EP titled “On the Road Pt.1”, soon to be followed by a second installment. These EP’s are music but they are also chronicles of my trips and adventures across the world. I’ve been traveling and living in different environments since I was a child, and because of that I’ve experienced life from different perspectives. These experiences gave me inspiration to express and create art in the form of music to highlight events, experiences, my faith, lessons, and tribulations I’ve endured in different places. Be on the lookout for Spring and Summer 2025 for merchandise, music, and visuals to come.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Three qualities, skills, and areas of knowledge that have impacted me most on my journey thus far are faith, hard/smart work, and decrement. My faith, knowing God is real and how Jesus walked this earth to give life, gives me hope that despite how wicked and cruel this world can be I can still find salvation. Hard/Smart work has put me in position to have continued mobility and progression in relation to self-growth, finances, and experiences. Decrement is a skill or a gift per say that I’ve had since I was a child; the gift of decrement has helped me avoid situations that could have been detrimental to me and my peers, while also keeping me away from treachery and deceitful people.

Advice I have for folks who are early in their life journey is to be consistent and active towards goals they set, and to be grateful and humble despite where they come from. I always advice the youth to mind their business and to never gossip or priorities someone else in their conversations. To focus on self embitterment and to be open to constructive criticism. When I was young I was like a sponge observing and taking in everything around me, ultimately keeping what I found useful and cutting off things that were deadweight. I advise folks to listen before they speak, and reflect before they act.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

I’m always looking for people to collaborate with, especially when it comes to anything that has to do with or correlates with art. I’m always looking to expand my network from producers, photographers, videographers, musicians, and creatives. Anyone that believes in telling stories and documenting history in the form of art are my kind of people. I can be found on all social media platforms under Quellthathitta or feel free to email me at hits.inthefieldmedia@gmail.com, don’t hesitate to reach out. I feel like the best art is when an artist(s) come together with likeminded goals to illustrate or broadcast a message without materialistic incentive, but with an emphasis to spend time, creativeness, and resources to display and create something that represents a people, place, or event in history.
