Meet Shana Adams

We were lucky to catch up with Shana Adams recently and have shared our conversation below.

Shana , so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?

I’ve learned that being the only one in the room who looks like me is not a disadvantage it’s an opportunity. Early on, I realized that my presence in those spaces wasn’t just about me; it was about representation, breaking barriers, and proving that excellence knows no boundaries.

To be effective and successful, I focus on three key things: confidence, preparation, and connection. Confidence means owning my expertise and trusting that I bring value to the table, no matter who else is in the room. Preparation ensures that I walk into every meeting, negotiation, or opportunity ready to deliver because being underestimated is common, but being unprepared is not an option. Lastly, I prioritize connection. Even in spaces where I may feel like an outsider, I find common ground, build relationships, and let my work speak for itself.

I also remind myself that every room I step into, I’m opening a door for someone else. That keeps me grounded, focused, and motivated to not just take up space, but to leave the door open for others to follow.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Markets shift, industries evolve, and sometimes things just don’t go as planned. The ability to adapt, learn quickly, and find creative solutions has helped me navigate challenges and keep growing. Whether it was shifting my tax firm’s strategy, expanding into boutique consulting, or learning new skills to keep my businesses competitive, adaptability has been my superpower.

Advice: Stay curious. Be willing to learn new skills, embrace technology, and think outside the box. If you’re early in your journey, focus on developing a problem-solving mindset and don’t be afraid to ask for help or invest in knowledge.

2. Financial Literacy & Business Strategy

Understanding money, taxes, and how to structure a business properly has been a game-changer. A lot of people have great ideas, but they struggle because they don’t have the financial knowledge to sustain their success. Mastering tax strategy, budgeting, and business planning has allowed me to not only build multiple businesses but also help others do the same.

Advice: If you’re starting out, learn the basics of business finances—how to track expenses, manage cash flow, and legally structure your business. Even if you plan to hire professionals later, knowing how money works in your industry will set you apart.

3. Relationship Building & Community Engagement

Business isn’t just about transactions; it’s about connections. Whether it’s with clients, vendors, or other entrepreneurs, relationships open doors that skills alone can’t. I’ve built my businesses through word-of-mouth, referrals, and strong relationships because people trust who they connect with.

Advice: Network strategically—not just for what you can gain, but for what you can give. Build genuine relationships with people in your field, be active in your community, and stay authentic in everything you do. Your reputation and relationships will carry you further than any marketing strategy.

At the end of the day, success is a combination of learning, adapting, and building strong connections. If you focus on these three things, you’ll be well on your way to creating something that lasts!
