Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Adrianne. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Adrianne, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us today. We’re excited to dive into your story and your work, but first let’s start with a broader topic that might be stopping many of our readers from pursuing their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. How have you managed to persist despite haters and nay-sayers that inevitably follow folks who are doing something unique, special or off the beaten path?
As long as you are staying true to yourself and doing what you love, you really don’t have to worry about the nay-sayers. Of course, it can be hard sometimes and you can have moments of doubt when you receive negative feedback, but you can take that feedback critically and really examine how to turn it into something positive OR just ignore it and keep doing what you love.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m an artist inspired by food and the culture surrounding it. Much of my influence comes from my Italian-American upbringing. For years, my art was focussed on the figure, but during the isolation of the pandemic, that inspiration was lost and I turned to my pantry. I started drawing all of the fun packaging and upcycled a pair of pants with my favorite pasta ingredients. I then went on to create these custom pants for clients, learning about new foods and essentially creating a portrait of each customer through their favorite meals. I now work with food brands creating fun items like stickers and charms and look forward to illustrating a cookbook soon!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
My parents have taught me to work hard and be independent from a young age. It is so important to put yourself out there and be kind to everyone you meet. Even if you are shy, just putting your work online can open so many doors. Keep staying true to what you love and uplift those around you.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
I have learned to delegate work to others. I’ve gone about life in a very jack of all trades, master of none type of way. I like to do everything myself – make all of my products by hand, do my own taxes, handle all client relations, etc. But outsourcing items, and getting an accountant and an agent have drastically improved my quality of life and with that I have been able to focus more time on the work I love to do.
