We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Justine Beauregard. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Justine below.
Hi Justine, great to have you with us today and excited to have you share your wisdom with our readers. Over the years, after speaking with countless do-ers, makers, builders, entrepreneurs, artists and more we’ve noticed that the ability to take risks is central to almost all stories of triumph and so we’re really interested in hearing about your journey with risk and how you developed your risk-taking ability.
When I first heard this question, I thought, “I’ve always been able to take risks. It was developing the courage to follow-through that really changed my life.”
I convinced myself for many years that I was a risk taker. Really, I was just playing it safe by taking small, calculated risks.
On paper, as someone with multiple autoimmune diseases, chronic illnesses, and neurodivergence, my threshold for fear of leaning into big swings should be quite broad.
My conditioning to be more conservative in life, however, was more impactful than I’d realized. Growing up with divorced parents taught me that I had to rely on myself to be secure. I needed a safe, corporate job. I needed to save money and invest it wisely. I needed to be prepared for hard times.
It wasn’t until I was in my 30’s and met with my financial planner for the first time that my perspective changed. I began to see how young I was and how risk-tolerant I could be – and not just from a financial standpoint! I could grow my business more aggressively, invest more in me and my big ambitions, and even take big leaps in my personal life.
Once I let that sink in, everything changed. Soon, I was making friends I would not have otherwise met. I doubled my income. I upgraded my car, home, and other assets from old to brand new. I was leveling up all over the place!
Risk went from investing small amounts of money in tools for my business to investing tens of thousands of dollars in full-time support, an upleveled brand and website, coaches, and more!
I’m working less, making more, building wealth, and enjoying the journey with more confidence and ease than ever. It’s a real gift.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’ve been an entrepreneur all my life.
I started running lemonade stands in my driveway and puppet shows in my backyard for $5 a ticket at 6 years old.
Then, I got my first sales job in 2007 and hated it. They plugged me into an automated cold calling system with a bad sales script. I then got rejected and ignored by thousands of people for hours a day.
One day, my supervisor left me in charge. I felt inspired to sell in my own way—and it worked!
Not only did I make a sale, but the person I was selling to sold themself on a higher amount than I even asked for on the call.
It was at that moment that I knew I had a special skill when it came to selling.
Eight years later, I started my first “real” business and failed fast.
To me, selling felt like something I had to endure to get to the thing I wanted to do.
So, instead of selling, I’d scroll social media and hope someone would reach out!
No one did.
There I was, with 30+ offers, working 60+ hours a week, making $0 for months.
Once I finally started to sell and found my unique way of selling, everything felt easier.
I went from never telling people what I did for a living to selling to people at the grocery store. Once, I even sold my offer from a hospital bed! It felt natural—and it worked!
It became obvious to me that there was a big gap in the market for entrepreneurs to learn how to sell. Not sell in a traditional sense, but in more natural, high-integrity ways. Ways they looked forward to selling and could actually feel good about and enjoy.
I’ve now mentored hundreds of business owners to create more predictable income. I’ve won awards for my coaching. I’ve helped my clients generate over $10MM in additional sales (and growing!).
I’ve dedicated my career to helping others experience selling from this place of ease.
Most of my clients have seen a 40% growth in sales or more, and some have grown their revenue by as much as 24X. They’ve done this using my unique closing framework and feel-good sales strategies.
The best part? Our work has lasting results, with wins that happen long after we partner together!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The most impactful skill in my journey has been compassion.
Listening to others’ needs, understanding their core desires, and holding space for their feelings is what makes me the best version of myself as a leader, salesperson, coach, and person. It’s a massively underrated skill in life, not just business.
The second skill that’s positively impacted me and my career is my ability to read people. I’m very quick to lean in and see things in others’ blind spots. To know, within seconds of meeting someone, what their greatest strengths are and why they’re special. My innate ability to recognize and honor someone’s value and uniqueness so quickly is something I deeply appreciate and try never to waste.
The third skill that’s been invaluable to me is my ability to turn complex concepts into simple, easy-to-apply frameworks. I can take anything and quickly relate it to something familiar using stories, metaphors, and examples for anyone at any level of understanding. It’s something that people compliment me on often, especially when they hear me doing it on my podcast, People Over Profit, or when coaching.
What I love most about these skills is that they’re all teachable. Anyone can learn and hone them with enough desire and practice! Just pick the one you want to work on most, and set a goal around it. For instance, “I want to be a better listener.” Then, search for examples of great listeners and follow them. Seek out resources that complement how you learn best, from podcasts to books, practicing with friends, and beyond. There is no wrong way to learn!
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
I love the book 10x Is Easier Than 2x.
Learning that we can’t “hustle” our way to 10x, must be unreasonable to achieve it, and have only one pathway to it was a huge relief.
Complexity is the enemy of 10x progress, which means we need exceptional boundaries and structure. These constraints allow our creativity to go through the roof, which I’ve seen happen first-hand. It’s like a vacation mindset. We become more focused and productive when we aren’t given unlimited time or slack with our goals.
Playing this big also demands a big reduction of busy work. If we are spread too thin and don’t dive head-first into what moves the needle, we will fail.
This book also taught me that I don’t have to justify that kind of leap. The freedom of the thought, “I just want to” is so powerful. Why justify our desires? Let’s just go big and crush it because we can!
