We recently connected with Kam and have shared our conversation below.
Kam, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
Growing up, I was the only girl of three boys . My aunts all had boys as well, so I was surrounded by males majority of the time. Being the only girl in the middle of different aged sibling and cousins in itself started my journey of resilience! I always looked up to them so I had to do what they did! Once I got out of high school I got a job, moved into my aunts house for the summer until college started and it’s there where she gave me my first responsibilities, bills and curfews . This is also when I met my boyfriend at the time! After the summer, I went to college to live the HBCU life and boy did I have a time. I maintained my relationship while in school and ultimately ended up moving back home to Atlanta to be with him, and we got married. Although my marriage didn’t last, we created the best thing that has ever happened to me in my life, which was my daughter. She is my everything, my why, and one of the main driving forces that make me as resilient and strong to this day. When I had her my life changed for more than what I could imagine. I was only 21. I didn’t want kids, but I have learned more from her than I have learned from anybody in this world. With her innocence of being a child and looking up to me, I never wanted or want to let her down, and it’s my hope to never do so.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Twisted Dips was created to be a place of Authenticity! When you walk into one of my establishments I want you to feel like you can breathe and just be your truest self with no judgments or 2nd thoughts.
Over in Morrow, I have the Art Studio! It was my 1st Brick and Mortar location. (1395 Southlake Parkway) It’s open for Paint and Sip Sessions, Event Space Rental and Selfie Experiences with Classes starting as low as $25 and Studio Rental at $50 Hourly. We survived the Pandemic by doing our Paint at Home Kits so we still offer that as well! All information can be found on our website at TwistedDipsAtl.com
Aside from “The Studio” , I own a Smoke shop in East Atlanta. At “The Shop”, we sell one of the most purest , flavorful and affordable Delta 8 Gummies on the market, along with Flowers, Carts, Disposables straight from our family fields in Oregon. In the East Atlanta Village we are mostly known for our gummies! We start out as low as 20Mgs per gummie and have a range up to 100Mgs. We have other major name brands that customers love, but I aim to support smaller upcoming brands and vendors if possible 1st.
In both establishments, I strive to provide a “Favorite” place to be outside of the home, a place to reset.
Overall, what’s most exciting for me is helping others feel better! Rather it’s a simple Smile, Hey how are you, or educating you on our products , serving others gives me a sense of accomplishment.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
3 Things most impactful along my journey has been First above all, my Faith! I love the quality in trusting God 1st. Next, in college, Ms. Tamika Bass taught me the importance of understanding others and meeting them on their level. This area of knowledge has helped communicate effectively with people of all ages. Lastly my favorite skill personally is my ability to solve problems. I can’t foresee problems or accidents that may arise, but my ability in certain situations to stay calm and figure it out has been beneficial in the positions that I’ve been in.
To develop these skills, as Nike says, Just do it… To me, in order to Improve these skills … FAIL! It hurts, it will stress you out, it will bother you, but as long as you learn from it you’re ok. One of my Favorite shirts reads “Nothing is a waste of time if you learned!” and that’s just that!
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
I can honestly say there isn’t just one person that has helped me overcome a lot of my challenges because Ive built such an amazing village that they won’t let me do it myself. There are multiple people with different strengths that help make up who I am, especially in areas where im weak. One of my favorite people to call hands-down is my big brother Jamarr. If I can’t get him on the phone, I can always call one of my other brothers, my sisters or one of my cousins. If I need a new or fresh perspective on some things, I will look to my daughter and my son first because they keep me young not just at heart and physically but also in my business dealings. I’ve also been blessed to have met so many talented people along my journey that I get to call friends and some framily. If you are in my close net, and I have your phone number, I am not afraid to use it and ask for the knowledge you may have. One or my favorite cousin Josh taught me on a vacation that we all can have great ideas, but there can only be one best ideal and I live with that Daily. I’m not always the brightest in the room, but I am my best with my village.. I couldn’t do anything with out my staff either past or present !!! They are an extension of me… especially Tay.
