Meet Zakia Gailliard

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Zakia Gailliard a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Zakia, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?

Resilience is the ability to withstand, adapt, and grow stronger in the face of adversity. It’s not just about surviving difficult circumstances but learning from them and using them as fuel to keep moving forward.

For me, resilience was shaped by the challenges I faced growing up. Being a child of divorced parents meant navigating two worlds, learning how to adapt to different environments, and managing emotions I didn’t always understand. Add to that the life of a military family—constant transitions, new schools, unfamiliar places, and the challenge of building connections, only to have to start over again. Those experiences could have made me feel unrooted, but instead, they taught me flexibility, courage, and how to find stability within myself.

Through it all, one of the most powerful lessons in resilience came from watching my mother. I witnessed her face setbacks, but I also saw her rise—again and again. She didn’t just survive challenges; she overcame them with strength and grace. She built a life of success despite difficulties, and that example planted a deep belief in me: setbacks don’t define you—how you respond to them does.

Those experiences shaped my mindset. They taught me that resilience isn’t about avoiding struggle but about pushing through it, learning from it, and coming out stronger on the other side. Today, I carry that resilience in everything I do, knowing that no challenge is wasted—it’s all preparing me for greater things ahead.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

1. Faith – My faith has been the foundation of everything I do. It has guided me through uncertainty, strengthened me in difficult times, and reminded me that my purpose is bigger than any obstacle. *Advice:* Stay rooted in your faith. Pray, seek wisdom, and trust that every challenge is shaping you for something greater. Let faith be your anchor and your guide.

2. Resilience– Life will bring challenges, but resilience is what helps you push through. I’ve faced setbacks, transitions, and moments of doubt, but each one taught me to persevere. *Advice:* See challenges as part of the journey. Build resilience by shifting your mindset, surrounding yourself with a strong support system, and trusting the process.

3. Education & Continuous Learning – Knowledge has been key to my growth. Understanding hair health, trichology, and holistic wellness has allowed me to serve others effectively. Advice:* Never stop learning. Invest in training, seek mentors, and stay curious. The more you grow, the more you can help others.

Everything I do is rooted in faith, purpose, and empowerment, and I encourage others to embrace these qualities as they build their own journey.
