We recently connected with Luke Henderson and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Luke, so happy to have you with us today and there is so much we want to ask you about. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others developed certain skills or qualities that we are struggling with can be helpful. Along those lines, we’d love to hear from you about how you developed your ability to take risk?
It’s become apparent to me that the potential for joy is on the other side of risk. Risk gives me the opportunity to bridge the gap from where I am to where I could be. Thinking and talking are wonderful, but action is the only thing I’ve seen that actually solves the questions of, “What if?”.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Music has been a passion project that’s surprisingly come to life this last year. I wrote all of the songs in my room out of enjoyment, not thinking too much of anything more. I reconnected with a friend who has been producing for 12 years. We ended up committing to a 12 song album, which is coming out in April (absolute shameless plug). My first single “More and More” just came out and it slaps! Do yourself a favor and go listen to it. Passion is the currency of life, and I’m intent on feeling alive. The creative outlet that music provides has been a gift to me. Whether the whole world listens or I’m the only person left on the planet, I’ll be playing guitar. I currently work as a pediatric nurse but am in the process of transitioning to firefighting (fun fact).
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Chase what you love. If you can do it for a job, do it. Most of us can’t. So chase it when you have the time. It will make life more full. For me, there is no ulterior motive when I play the guitar. I play it because the act of playing the guitar, in itself, is satisfying to me.
Being surrounded and encouraged by other creative people has done more for me than I think I understand. They have pushed me to be better and to achieve what I would not if I were by myself. Working with a producer (Chris Merrell) who knows what he’s doing has made the process so much better. Do these things with people who are driven by passion and not money.
I would encourage anyone who is in the process of making an album to be patient, to understand there will be days where you want to smash your guitar and rip your hair out. Fail til you succeed. Success might be right around the corner. If you want it, you will continue.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
The Alchemist is amazing. Of course there’s East of Eden, Lord of the Rings, A Man Called Ove, Mere Christianity, etc.. However, I picked the Alchemist because it addresses the feelings of longing and desire. The main character encounters a strong sense of contentment when he begins to understand all that he’s been chasing has been nearby the whole time. This idea has challenged me to see beauty wherever I am, to be present where I am instead of always looking to the future to satisfy a longing I can’t seem to touch.
