We were lucky to catch up with Colton Conner recently and have shared our conversation below.
Colton, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I get my work ethic and motivation from a very strong desire to create music at a high level to bring God glory. From a young age, I have always loved drums and music. I have devoted many many hours to my craft and it is rewarding to see projects come alive. My life’s passion is to play music for the Lord and each and everyday I want to improve my skills and get just 1% better.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Hello! I’m a session drummer with a deep love for recording and mixing. I’ve been drumming in some form or fashion for nearly 15 years, and every time I sit behind a kit, I still get excited. As a session musician, my goal is to craft drum parts that enhance a song—complementing the other elements rather than competing with them.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Effort, Connection, Experience
Becoming an effective drummer takes dedication. You have to put in the hours of practice to develop the skills needed to step into any session or gig with confidence.
Beyond practice, connecting with other musicians is invaluable. Playing with others not only sharpens your skills but also teaches you how to listen, adapt, and complement the music as a whole.
Once you’ve built a solid foundation behind the kit, make a habit of recording yourself and seeking out opportunities to play on songs for others. The more you do this, the more confident and versatile you’ll become—ultimately making you a better musician for any gig.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
This is a time game from my experience so far. I am currently trying to balance a full time job while continually connecting with producers, mixing engineers, and other musicians to grow my network and potentially lead to more jobs down the road. It can be difficult at times, but throughout this journey I have been part of some incredible projects and am excited for more!
