We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lenyce Boyd. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lenyce below.
Lenyce, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I believe my resilience and work ethic come from my Mom. Growing up, I watched her handle challenges with such strength and determination, no matter how tough things got. She always led by example. showing me how to push through hard times, stay focused and never give up. Her work ethic is something I’ve always admired – she worked tirelessly, always with purpose and she taught me the value of hard work, consistency and doing things to be best of my ability. Her ability to stay calm and stay driven even when life was not easy, really shaped my own approach to challenges and hard work.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I was a stay-at-home Mom so deciding to make this bold move to open a bridal boutique came with my family in mind first. To achieve my family-first goal, I needed an appointment-only type business for a personal experience for my clients. With that plan, we were able to operate with shorter hours and less days than the typical retailer has.
Afterall, the process of finding your gown, having in-house alterations and all the various stages, we will have contact for sometimes a year. A bride and her loved ones become like family or close friends by the time she walks down the aisle. My professional focus for Bacio Bacio Bridal is on providing the absolute best customer service to our brides.
At our boutique, it is a “brides world” with only a couple of rules – have an open mind and have fun. High pressure sales tactics are forbidden. Our brides know when they’re in “the one” because we get to that special “Yes” moment together.
Being able to provide that level of care and service to brides, comes down to our staff. They are like what a Michelin Star chef is to the most successful restaurants. Our bridal stylists and seamstress were selected because of how kind, joyful, compassionate and caring they are. Our wedding gown designers are also selected with those same qualities in mind. We all depend on and trust each other knowing how incredibly important a bride’s journey is to find the perfect wedding gown and go through the process with them until they walk down the aisle.
In 2005, when I founded Bacio Bacio Bridal, there was not a single bridal shop in the County that was providing an elevated, friendly shopping experience for brides to be in an atmosphere that felt like home. I designed the space to give a feel of comfort with comfy seating, large dressing suites, elegant lighting, forward facing gown displays and personal appointment times. After 20 years, we feel flattered that the industry has finally caught on and many boutiques now have followed us. It feels very good.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Most impactful in my journey is my Faith in God. Once, I accepted that, my anxiety and worry about what others would think, stopped. I mean what if my crazy idea to open a bridal boutique failed, what if nobody comes? This could be embarrassing for my family living in our small community. We could lose a lot of money.
When you build your company or start something new, remember to make a connection with individuals on a daily basis. Reach out to someone. Send a note, say hello to a stranger, smile at someone. Do this for a couple of days. See how it makes you feel and decide if you want to keep it up. It makes me feel lighter, happier. People love kindness and they’ll remember you, they will remember your business. It costs nothing.
Intuition is a big one for me. I really listen to my gut feelings. I do not analyze things very much. That just makes it all more confusing. Sometimes, ideas will just come to me to do something and so I just do it. Write it down, sketch it and make a plan. Then, just do it.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
I love reading. I read all story types but the book that has played an important role in my development is The Four Agreements by Don Miquel Ruiz.
1. Be impeccable with your word.
2. Do not take anything personally.
3. Do not make assumptions.
4. Always do your best.
This book changed my way of thinking, elevated my happiness and success.
