We recently connected with Dr. Krista Jenney, Pt, Dpt and have shared our conversation below.
Dr. Krista, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Overcoming imposter syndrome in my journey involved several key steps. Firstly, specializing in pelvic floor physical therapy during my schooling required rigorous training and a deep commitment to learning. This foundational knowledge was crucial, but imposter syndrome often crept in despite my preparation. Having mentors with over 15 years of experience in the field was invaluable. Their guidance and reassurance helped me navigate doubts and gain confidence in my abilities. Continuously challenging myself to learn and grow further solidified my expertise, gradually diminishing feelings of inadequacy. Ultimately, persistence, mentorship, and ongoing education were pivotal in overcoming imposter syndrome and thriving in my specialized field.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
As a pelvic floor and women’s health physical therapist in the Austin area, I provide both in-home and in-clinic care to support individuals navigating pelvic pain, pregnancy and postpartum changes, as well as urinary, bowel, and sexual dysfunction. My passion lies in delivering personalized, evidence-based care while advocating for pelvic floor physical therapy as a standard part of women’s healthcare—especially during pregnancy and postpartum, as is common in other countries.
Pelvic pain, hip and low back pain, incontinence, leakage, painful intercourse, scar pain, prolapse, GI issues, and abdominal separation are often dismissed as “normal,” but they don’t have to be. With the right tools and support, these challenges can be prevented, improved, and even eliminated. My mission is to empower individuals with the knowledge and care they need to reclaim strength, confidence, and control over their bodies.
Beyond one-on-one care, I am deeply committed to education and advocacy. I regularly offer free workshops to provide guidance through pregnancy, postpartum, and beyond, ensuring that more people have access to vital information about pelvic health. Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Reflecting on my journey, three qualities that were most impactful are perseverance, self-motivation, and the willingness to step out of my comfort zone and network with other healthcare providers in the community. These qualities have been crucial in establishing my practice and building a strong reputation through word-of-mouth referrals. It’s important for those starting out to take these steps seriously:
Perseverance: Stay committed to your goals despite challenges. Keep learning and growing, even when faced with setbacks.
Self-Motivation: Take initiative in your professional development. Seek out opportunities for continuing education and skill enhancement.
Networking and Community Engagement: Don’t underestimate the power of networking. Getting to know other providers in your community can lead to valuable collaborations and referrals.
For those early in their journey, my advice is to prioritize continuing education and seek mentorship from experienced professionals. Don’t hesitate to put yourself out there and meet others in your field. Remember, being young or recently graduated doesn’t diminish your knowledge or skills—embrace your expertise and showcase it confidently.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m always open to partnering with providers such as midwives, doulas, acupuncturists, chiropractors, massage therapists, fitness/yoga instructors, and lactation consultants, among others. Whether it’s sharing knowledge over coffee or hosting workshops together, connecting and collaborating can enrich the services we provide to our clients. If you’re interested in collaborating, feel free to reach out to me directly through my contact information or website. Let’s create meaningful partnerships that benefit our clients’ holistic health journeys.
