Meet Alison Mullings

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alison Mullings. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Alison , thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.

For me, imposter syndrome vanished when I just admitted I wasn’t an expert. I love interviewing actors, and creators and some have very impressive resumes. The first time the table was turned and I was being interviewed I immediately felt like I had nothing to offer, everyone’s going to find out I’m not as far as I want to be in my career, I’m not even union status etc. But when I gave up the idea of having to have all the answers ready, or to look impressive all that melted away. I’m still a student, in everything I’m pursuing; my acting career and my podcast career. I started my podcast because I had questions about the entertainment industry in Canada and wanted to find out more, there’s no need for me to pretend like I know everything. Not an imposter, just a student.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I’ve been an actor for a long time, I went to Toronto Film School after high school, have been involved in numerous theatre performances around Ontario and have dabbled in Film and Television.
I’m currently represented by Take Four Talent, shout to Sabrina Astbury for taking me on this past summer, she runs a phenomenal agency and has built a wonderful community with her roster that I’ve never experienced before.
I think for any actor, the ultimate goal is to be Creative Full Time. I’d love to give up my day job to be a full time actor/creative. Unfortunately, for a lot of creatives that’s not the way it’s worked out.
I started my podcast “Creative Full Time” in November 2023. On my podcast I interview actors and people in the entertainment industry about how they’re doing the damn thing in Canada. I started this podcast for a multitude of reasons; firstly, I was listening to podcasts for actors but they’re all mostly based in Hollywood and I wanted to know about the industry that I was currently in. I’ve learned more and more how important it is to know the industry of where you are, whether that’s UK, Canada or otherwise, there’s no point (yet) learning all about Hollywood’s industry if you’re can’t work there and are trying to build your career in Canada.
Secondly, I had a whole bunch of questions about the Canadian Entertainment Industry and wanted to learn more. I’m not a great networker in person (we’re improving) so I considered these interviews networking on my terms, asking all the questions I’ve always wanted to ask and meeting people I’ve always wanted to meet.
Another reason I wanted to start the podcast was to highlight and amplify Canadian talent, the running joke with the entertainment industry here is that you have to leave, work in the United States and then you’ll be famous and desirable in Canada. Why? We can all agree there is so much talent in Canada, in every department of the entertainment industry, so why not celebrate the talent that we have.
Lastly, as many actors know, there’s no “one way” to be an actor. Some actors go to theatre school, some jump into it later in life, some just start and learn on set. Each and every actor’s journey is different and I love to hear all of the stories.
Now, more than ever it’s important to support Canadian Made companies, and I think that we also need to support Canadian Made talent.
If you’re interested in supporting Canadian talent, you can watch my podcast on YouTube @CreativeFullTime, or you can listen on your favourite podcast app.
If you’re interested in being a guest on my podcast you can email [email protected]
Another way we support the entertainment industry is red carpet interviews and promotional material for film and theatre premieres, if that’s something you’d be interested in please email [email protected]
If your company would like to collaborate with our podcast in the form of ads/promotion email [email protected] and we’ll send you our available packages.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

The ability to just start is truly the most important skill a creative can have. I’ve been doing podcast interviews for over a year now and I’m still learning how to make my podcast better and better. If you wait for perfect conditions you will never be able to start. I strongly encourage anyone to look at Creative Full Time podcast episodes at the beginning (Ep. 1-5) and compare them to the recent episodes (Ep. 50-55) the difference is DRAMATIC. No matter how much research you do, how much preparation you do, you will always, ALWAYS come across something you weren’t prepared for and you will learn on the go.
With that said I think the second quality a creator of any kind should have is problem-solving skills, creative problem-solving is so important because again, roadblocks are guaranteed to appear throughout the process and navigating how you pivot instead of throwing in the towel is how you successfully finish the project.
One last thing, especially for those who are the creators of projects. Trust your gut. You will get A LOT of people who have never done what you’re trying to do giving advice on things they’re not educated in. Everyone is trying to be helpful, but it’s important to say no. If you have issues saying no you can say “Thank you, I’ll keep that in mind”, they don’t need to know you’ll be keeping that in the “trash advice” part of your mind.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

I am always looking for guests to interview on the podcast, so if you or someone you know would like to be a guest send me an email, or connect with me through Instagram @creativefulltime
I’m entering my sponsorship era of podcasting so if you have a business or know someone with a business that would like advertising please email [email protected] and I would be happy to collaborate.
I will be looking to expand my team in the spring/summer so if you like what the podcast is doing and want to be a part of the Creative Full Time team, whether that be content creation, videography, editing, public relations etc. please send us an e-mail, I’d love to get in touch and see how we can work together. All inquiries can email [email protected]
