Meet Hannah Benson

We were lucky to catch up with Hannah Benson recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hannah, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?

My creativity has always flowed in various forms throughout my life. At first it was drawing and painting and then eventually it formed into makeup and digital content creation. Every once in awhile creativity can be hard to come by, especially if there is no inspiration. So in order to find inspiration to keep that creativity alive, you have to find the beauty in everyday things. You have to scour the internet for inspiration and ideas and moments that move you enough to get off your ass and create something inspiring. It can be difficult, especially if you’re in a personal rut or feel that you’re an imposter. But everyone has those moments and creativity can also flow from those moments as well.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I have been a content creator for 10 years. Ten years ago it was called “beauty blogging” and Instagram was an exciting newer app that allowed us beauty bloggers to share ideas, create content, and have fun. I’m still a content creator but social media has drastically changed and I’m now currently trying to navigate that. I love makeup and I love creating eye looks, lip looks, and product content (pictures and videos). Makeup is a way for me to express myself! It has also opened a lot of doors to opportunities I could have never dream of (being posted on Urban Decay and E.L.F Cosmetic instagram pages, working with so many brands and receiving products to try and share). Content creation changes daily, along with the tides of social media, but it makes it that much more exciting to constantly have to be on top of knowing when new products are launching, using trending audio that best supports your niche, and watching the friends you have made through content creation reaching their goals and dreams as well!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I think three qualities that have impacted my journey in content creation would be 1) resilience, you cannot become a content creator if you cannot stand the storm that is other people’s opinions of your work. You have to be strong and not let anyone one person or group knock you down. 2) consistency, you need to work out a schedule that works for you and consistently create and post your work! 3) Maturity; I have grown up a lot since starting my instagram in 2014 and I think maturity plays a big part in how you come off to strangers on the internet and how you interact with brands. Brands see how you interact with your following and with off-the-wall comments that trolls might post on your posts. You need to have a level head and feel your strong feelings off of social media.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

GIVE YOURSELF SOME GRACE! No matter your job, we all get overwhelmed sometimes and I think a burnout follows if you don’t allow yourself to feel all the emotions you feel when getting overwhelmed and then allowing some time to rest, physically and mentally. If you feel overwhelmed remove yourself from your current situation (go to a different room, go for a walk, exercise, go see a movie) and do something that can change your mindset for a little bit. When you’re ready to tackle whatever it is that overwhelmed you, you might feel better after putting some distance between you and the problem.
