We were lucky to catch up with Mikaela Mcekron recently and have shared our conversation below.
Mikaela, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
If I were to define the word imposter I would define it as a state in which doubt and insecurity bullies you into a belief that you are not capable. The first step for me when overcoming imposter syndrome was to attack the source of my insecurities. I identified that I had a terrible habit of comparing myself to other people and I allowed my fear of not measuring up to stop me from even trying. After several years of a lack of productivity and hearing the muffled screams of stifled dreams and visions. I decided to lean truly into my faith which is in Jesus Christ. In scripture Romans 8:14-15: “You are a son/daughter of God and he is your Father” and another talks about being a special people in 1 Peter 2:9 both texts emphasize a sense of identity independent of talents, callings, and gifting. In really taking the scriptures and internalizing them I realized that there is only one Mikaela McEkron who has ever been created and there will never be another me. Why would I waste time replicating the life and talent of another when I was uniquely created to be myself. Sure there is always room for growth and sharpening your skills but I feel most confident and authentic when I unapologetically be myself wether that be through my art, the music I create or poetry and even the clothes I decide to adorn my body with. Imitation is flattery but Imposter syndrome is the enemy of creativity, uniqueness and fuels insecurity.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
As an artist, creative, podcast host, singer, creative director, and fashion enthusiast, I wear many hats, each one offering a unique space to express my passion for creativity and innovation. My work bridges the worlds of art, music, fashion, and storytelling, allowing me to connect with others in deeply personal and transformative ways.
What excites me most about what I do is the freedom to constantly explore and share my faith in exciting and unconventional ways. Whether I’m crafting music that resonates on an emotional level, directing a creative project that pushes boundaries, or sharing insights through my podcast, there’s always room for growth and reinvention. My approach to fashion is all about empowering individuals to express themselves boldly through connecting them with their God given identity, and as a consultant, I enjoy helping others find their voice through style. I believe fashion is an art form—one that communicates so much without uttering a word. For all your fashion needs check out my @Mikaelawiththespecs and @Mikaelawiththelooks
One of the most special parts of my journey is the opportunity to collaborate with other creatives, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible while keeping authenticity at the heart of everything. Every project, podcast episode, or song I create is a part of my mission to inspire others to be their most authentic selves, no matter the medium.
As for what’s new, I’m always working on fresh ideas. Currently, I’m expanding my creative consulting to work with more brands and individuals, helping them develop authentic visual identities. Plus, there are some exciting music releases on the horizon that I’m eager to share soon—stay tuned!
Ultimately, my brand is a reflection of my belief that we are all fearfully and wonderfully made, we all have a mission, a purpose and a message , and it’s meant to inspire, and, and empower the world . Whether it be through my podcast, music, or consulting, I aim to offer something that feels genuine and connects with people on a deeper level.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back on my journey, the three qualities that have been most impactful are Curiosity, Discipline, and Grit. Each of these has played a crucial role in shaping my path and helping me overcome challenges along the way. Here’s how these qualities have influenced my journey and some advice for those just starting their own.
Curiosity has been a driving force behind everything I do. Ive always wanted to go deep and discover the two and third dimensions of what seems to be a one dimensional life . It drives me to explore new ideas, learn constantly, and never stop seeking knowledge. Whether it’s delving into a new creative field, understanding emerging trends, or discovering innovative ways to express my art, curiosity has kept me hungry for more. It keeps the creative flame alive and inspires me to try new things that might be outside my comfort zone. I serve a very creative God a God who assembled the milky way and set the world on a perfect access. My heart to understand and my constant awe and wonder of Him propels me to create and communicate these themes. And for those early in their journey, my advice is to always ask questions and stay open to learning. Don’t be afraid to experiment and explore the unknown—curiosity is what will keep your creativity fresh and evolving.
Discipline is what has allowed me to turn my creative passions into consistent output. While creativity is essential, it’s the discipline to show up every day, put in the work, and stay focused that turns dreams into reality. The routine of practicing, refining, and executing ideas is what transforms concepts into finished pieces. For anyone just starting out, my advice is to develop a solid routine and stick to it, even on days when motivation feels low. I would also say get a solid community of people around you who believe in you and want to see you succeed yet aren’t afraid to push you and tell you the truth when you’re slacking.
I am beyond blessed to have an incredible team and family behind me to push me and motivate me.
Finally, Grit has been the backbone of my journey. The road hasn’t always been smooth, and there have been countless setbacks, rejections, and challenges along the way. But it’s the ability to keep pushing forward, even when things get tough, that has truly defined my progress. Grit is about resilience, persistence, and believing in the process, even when it feels like the odds are stacked against you. For early-stage creatives, I’d say don’t be afraid of failure or rejection—it’s part of the journey. Consider it as character development and a great way to remain humble. Develop the mental toughness to persevere, keep learning from mistakes, and never give up on your vision. The creative journey is full of ups and downs, but it’s grit that helps you endure through them.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
In the past 12 months, my biggest area of growth has been developing grit, confidence, and a deeper belief in myself. I’ve come to a profound understanding that I am exactly where I’m meant to be, doing what I was created to do. This realization has ignited a new sense of resolve within me. I’ve learned to push through challenges with more resilience, trusting that every setback is simply a part of the journey. It’s not always easy, but embracing grit has given me the strength to keep moving forward.
I’ve also gained much more confidence in my abilities, trusting that I have something valuable to offer. This newfound confidence has allowed me to take bigger risks, share my ideas more openly, and believe that my voice truly matters in the world. I’ve stopped second-guessing myself as much and have become more grounded in my purpose.
What’s also become clearer to me is the importance of what I do for others. In a world that often feels chaotic and turbulent, lives need inspiration, dreams need to be rekindled, and hope needs to be restored. I believe that through my art, my podcast, and my creative projects, I can be a part of that healing process. It’s given me a deeper sense of purpose and an even greater determination to continue pursuing my passions.
If I could share anything about my journey in the last year, it would be this: the key to overcoming uncertainty is to cultivate unwavering belief in a God that is consistent and rich in love and mercy. When you know that the God of the universe has equipped you for every good work it gives you purpose and reminds you that what you’re doing matters, it gives you the courage to press on even when it feels tough.
