Hi Joseph , great to have you with us today and excited to have you share your wisdom with our readers. Over the years, after speaking with countless do-ers, makers, builders, entrepreneurs, artists and more we’ve noticed that the ability to take risks is central to almost all stories of triumph and so we’re really interested in hearing about your journey with risk and how you developed your risk-taking ability.

There are two main factors that have shaped my views on risk taking.

The first is a steady diet of failure. Early on in my career, I was terrified of failing. This gripping fear limited my willingness to take the types of chances necessary to develop a creative mindset. Once I realized and accepted the power of so called ‘failure’ as a impetus for learning and growth, my path to success started to open. This is an easy concept to understand intellectually, but hard to endure emotionally. However, over time you develop ‘emotional ‘scar tissue’ that helps weather the inevitable storms required for true growth as an artist and entrepreneur.

The second factor is the support of a partner – in my case, my wife, Michelle. She is a like-minded dreamer and entrepreneur. We encourage and support one another as we strive realize our ‘crazy’ dreams. Our relationship has given me the strength to take necessary risks and provided me the soft landing needed after hard falls.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I am the band leader of a new ska-punk party band, named The Dead Bettys, We are a powerhouse ensemble of 11 top-notch musicians, who play an infectious style of high energy music, rooted in the musical tradition of ska. But our take on popular music includes all genres – pop, rock, jazz, R&B, reggae………and a Dead Betty show is an epic party, not to be missed. Our magic lies in a rock solid rhythm section accompanied but a full throttle 6 piece full horn section. This combo creates sonic magic that has wowed our audiences. We have fans of all ages and walks of life. Even better, we donate a large portion of our performance proceeds to local charities. Great music – great party – even better cause.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Communication

Persistence

Clear vision

The primary reason my prior attempts at forming a band were unsuccessful, was that I didn’t have a crystal clear vision of exactly what I wanted to achieve. Once I new precisely what type of ensembleI wanted to create and the types of musicians I would need, things fell into place. With a clear vision, I was able to effectively to communicate this to people and convince them to join the team. After I identified the necessary musicians, I was obnoxiously persistent; to the point that several on my current band mates joined this project, simply to get me off their backs. It wasn’t pretty, but it was effective.

If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?

The Dead Bettys have become quite successful over the last year. We work incredibly hard and all of our effort is truly paying off. The challenge I am now facing as the band leader, is how to say no to many of the opportunities that are being presented to us. Early on, we would accept any gig, no matter how small or how little it paid, in order to get exposure and develop a loyal audience. Now I. have to prioritize the gigs that will provide the band ‘the most bang for each buck’. But it is difficult to say no to people and venues, especially if they were instrumental in supporting us early on in our journey.
