We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Marquis Diamond a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Marquis with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
Where do I get my work ethic from? Well I can honestly say my work ethic comes from 2 things. One my grandfather raised me and he was an electrician so I come from a do it yourself household. When things needed to be fixed or maintained around the house my grandad brother and I that was our duties. Also every summer growing up from 1st grade – 9th grade I had to go with my grandparents to their summer ranch in East Texas and if you ever been somewhere after you have been away for 9 months there’s a lot of maintenance work that has to get done before you can comfortably enjoy your stay.
My second drive for good work ethic is sports. I’ve played basketball, baseball, and swim team since kindergarten so competition is a driving factor to have good work ethic. I was raised with a lot of brothers and male friends and losing was never something that was comfortable to me. So whatever I had to work on to get better I did so I could always win.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
What do I do? Well the better question maybe what don’t I do. But to answer the question best is that I run nightclubs in Hollywood, California. I’ve created a promotional team of you promoters and influencers and nightclubs give us contracts to enhance their hip hop nights or urban nights. So most clubs have different music and crowd on each night. My second service is I work with the less fortunate and assist them with clothing, essential supplies, food, and various other items. Target market is skid row but during the year I have Back 2 School, Turkey GiveAway, and Toy GiveAway for the kids in the Crenshaw Community. I also assist other non-profits by linking them with any services they may lack to make sure they can effectively complete their task at hand.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Hospitality because people now days lack people skills. Being hospitable is a daily routine when you come in contact with other human beings. But society persuades people that it’s something you turn off and on.
Discernment is the second quality I think that’s most impactful because you never know what someone is going through. So being able to view situations from various perspectives allows a person to trust in your visions.
And last would be Vision because seeing something other people can’t see or understand is a task. But knowing your vision and following through is one of the most exhilarating feelings we can produce.
If you are just starting out make sure you stick with your principals. As a leader you don’t always have to be the boss or lead. Practice on using your strengths and placing people around you that are strong where you may feel weak. Best thing to have is an all star team with no ego. If you can create that environment you will have success.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
The book that’s probably been the most impactful to me may be Sun Tzu Art of War and 50cents 50 Laws of Power. These books show you that you have to create a strategy and a plan if attack in all walks of life especially business. You have to know when to be the aggressor and when to fall back and let things play out. Dealing with people patients is key because rushing things can destroy everything you worked to produce.
