We recently connected with Alice Yoon and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Alice, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
Imposter syndrome is so real! It can stem from lack of confidence, self-esteem, but also from being the new person in a new industry, from starting from scratch, etc. I definitely had my fair shares of imposter syndrome. I’ve dabbled in various industries of work including service, public health (nonprofit), technology sales. The 2 main things that helped me overcome imposter syndrome is 1) being open to new opportunities and 2) carrying over your soft skills to continue your journey.
Challenging myself to work in different environments has allowed me to learn different skillsets. Serving/bartending helped me to encounter so many different types of people as well as approach tasks with efficiency and a multi-tasking mindset. Working in nonprofit helped me to foster relationships with vendors/stakeholders and lead with empathy/integrity. Tech sales has helped me to communicate efficiently and be a good negotiator.
The skills I learned were transferrable and invaluable as I now take it into my permanent makeup journey.
Having the multitude of experiences in my life where I learned how to become better at these different jobs helped me to see that everyone starts out somewhere. With hard work and willingness to learn continuously, I believe you have a chance to achieve something great in whatever industry you’re in!

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I provide permanent makeup services, including eyebrow, eyeliner, and lip blush tattoo. Permanent makeup services offer variety of techniques to implant semi-permanent pigment into the outer layers of the skin to mimic makeup.
My most popular (and favorite) service is the eyebrow services, and we provide 3 different techniques to cater to everyone’s individual needs – 1) nano brows, 2) ombre/shading, and 3) combo brows. In my line of work, it’s extremely important to provide unique and customized approach to each client because everyone has a different brow shape, arch, curvature of the face, hair color, etc. I use my time with clients to really dive into the consultations and get to know their natural features and desired outcomes. This helps me to create the most beautiful work that enhances my client’s natural beauty.
My ability to really listen and empathize with what my clients are looking for, is what sets me apart from other artists. I want my clients to not only love their results but to feel comfortable and confident in their decision to include me in their permanent makeup journey. I love what I do, and I take pride in what I create so being able to help people feel their absolute best in their own skin has been the most gratifying part of my work!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Integrity, work ethic, and artistic skills.
Integrity can be applied to your personal characteristics as well as your work. It requires a self-reflection and commitment to the values you have. I think with this line of work, integrity is extremely important in serving your clients. I’m continuously striving to provide my best work with each client, offer guidance and resources for folks who are interested in permanent makeup, and this way, I will always be working with the client’s best outcome in mind.
Work ethic is the ability for you to push even when things get difficult. Starting this journey has been anything but smooth. I didn’t even know where to start when I first learned about permanent makeup, what the licensing process was, what I needed to do to get a business started, etc. But these were also the exciting parts about this whole journey. I put my head down and put the hours in everyday to learn and execute. Being open to learning opportunities and working through challenges was so impactful as it literally allowed me to start my own business!
I have always been artistic even as a child. At one point, I was applying to art schools and was an aspiring fine arts student. While I’ve not followed that path, I’ve now done a full 360 and find myself following my passion for art in permanent makeup!
The advice I have for folks who are early in their journey is to keep an open mind – for yourself and opportunities you face! There will be challenges along the way and it’s okay to be overwhelmed or not know what you need to do. The great news is that you can find the answers! Your work ethic can only be proved by you so keep the promises you make to yourself on the hours you will dedicate to your work, the practice that you may need to put in, and whatever else that will be a testament to your work ethic. With that, you’ll also build integrity for yourself and how you connect with your potential audience, customer, or clients. And lastly, have passion for what it is you want to do! (:

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’d love to have an opportunity to partner with other beauty professionals in the area, whether that be hair stylists, med spa professionals, estheticians, etc.
There are so many professionals that are talented and passionate about what they do. With specific areas of service that we specialize and excel in, I’d love to see how we can collaborate to share our stories as well as potentially create a shared work environment that highlights each of our unique skillsets.
