We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Justin Adam a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Justin , so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I believe many people experience imposter syndrome as it can be hard to believe that you are in fact enacting a passion or dream. For me, my journey started in mental health a decade ago working in direct care with acute patients in treatment facilities. This experience, as intense as it could be at times, gave me a wealth of base knowledge when it comes to helping those in need. I continued to hone this skill working with children of many backgrounds and disorders which gives you a degree a confidence in dealing with any extreme conditions. I truly believe that experience is the main force in overcoming imposter syndrome. As I began to read and study about how the mind works through the lens of hypnosis, everything started to come together and make sense, however there was still the question of “But… can I do it?”. Having a solid base in theory is half the equation because it is important to have the understanding to be able to implement into the experience. What was left was to take the leap and see if I could bring about change in the same rapid manner that the studies in the hypnosis book described. I began my own practice and of course struggled at times, but overall the feedback was quite spectacular. When you start to hear people tell you how the process that you help guide them through was the only thing that has helped and completely changed their lives, that is when you put the final nail into the coffin of feeling like an imposter. It’s the feedback and knowing you have put in all the effort to become who you have envisioned that diminishes that doubting imposter inside.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I started out in the field of psychology and worked in direct patient care with children and at risk youth for over 16 years. During this time I began to study and understand hypnosis and hypnotherapy as it was popping up in various places under different names. I became interested in learning what exactly hypnosis was and soon realized their model of the mind made so much sense and included “The Unconscious” and techniques to work and communicate with that part of the mind. I began to experiment upon myself and soon found the results to be powerful, with just the limited understanding I had gained. This led me to get certified and start up my own LLC using hypnosis as a healing modality.
My business, Mind Will Heal hypnosis, is a practice I have set up utilizing many different hypnosis techniques with the goal of creating a new model of existence. This can be utilized for really anything but has been especially effective with trauma resolution, phobias, regulating emotional states, and connecting to a deeper spiritual side within. The techniques that I use involve a visualization process where at first you will be guided into a deeply relaxing state. This state you still have full control and are able to converse back and forth with me the entire time but simply feel very relaxed. You are then guided on a journey to resolve whatever the issue that is present and bring about a new powerful state that you would rather experience instead. You are then given tools to be able to access this new state in your every day life to integrate it fully.
What is different about my practice is that I learned from the Alchemy Institute of Hypnosis which is a slightly different form than most other hypnosis sessions. The difference being we are taught how to connect with inner parts of yourself as well as spiritual guides or archetypes to accentuate the healing. Because of this work I have seen some of the most powerful transformations within one session. Being able to connect with an inner child that experienced a trauma and saving that part from the experience is inspiring. While at the same time allowing someone to let go of all the pent up emotions and learned behaviors in favor of a new pattern they can now move forward in life with. There are numerous times of someone telling me after a session that they just can’t believe that this issue they had all their life is now gone and they feel great. I collaborate with other practitioners, such as sound bath and yoga to create a unique experience with the overlapping modalities. There are a lot of opportunities in the coming months to check out what it is all about. These group sessions are a great way to get an idea of how hypnosis works.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three qualities that have been most impactful to my journey would have to be focusing on self progression, having a positive outlook, and being guided by intuition. I have found that when you focus on progressing yourself whether that be through study, a practice, or a way to engage in life that pushes you towards growth, you find that obstacles and problems become necessary areas of understanding, instead of a burden. This focus has helped me to deal with any of the hardships that come with working in mental health. It also has allowed me to view the way the mental health system is not functioning properly and needs a change, instead of just being caught in it. When you focus on your own journey instead of what “society” tells you to do, you gain way more value in life and yourself.
Along with focusing on self progression, I have cultivated a positive outlook in most situations. This positive outlook has allowed me to see the potential of a situation, rather than being stuck and overwhelmed. This has helped in carving my own path, as there are many struggles anytime you move in the direction away from societal paths.
Lastly intuition has played a great role in moving me forward. There have been countless times when I knew it was time to move on from a place, or to choose a less traveled path because it felt right and in alignment with me. One such instance is choosing to follow the hypnotherapy path rather than going to graduate school to become a counselor. Somewhere deep inside I knew the right way for me was to go against what societally is the common standard. It is only in retrospect where you can see why those decisions paid off.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
In essence the word “Hypnosis” is just a way of understanding how the mind works, and then employing techniques based off of that understanding. To me, almost everything can be adapted to utilized these techniques especially in a collaborative way. I am continuously looking for folks to collaborate with as the benefits that hypnosis can add are infinite. Some collaborations I would love to partner with are yoga, counseling/therapy, psychedelic assisted therapy, sound bath healing, energy healing, and basically anything that could utilize finding a powerful inner state to progress someone in some way. The possibilities are really endless.
