We recently connected with Macc Movado and have shared our conversation below.

MACC , thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us today. We’re excited to dive into your story and your work, but first let’s start with a broader topic that might be stopping many of our readers from pursuing their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. How have you managed to persist despite haters and nay-sayers that inevitably follow folks who are doing something unique, special or off the beaten path?

Honestly, it gets very difficult. We live in a day and age where most environments that you find yourself in our competitive and not complementary to self growth or positive recognition in any light. What helps me to stay “aligned” with my objectives is remembering why I started to begin with. Remembering how often times it is darkest before dawn and Being grateful for my opportunities eternally outweighs any pain from any scrutiny I could receive from a” naysayer”

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I’ve been writing poetry since I was a child and the transition into hip-hop occurred in my early teens. I still write. I still produce. And I still make music. I always will. Music is an integral part of who I am. I have a project releasing next month on 3/24

Writing out my issues and experiences has been very helpful over the years and the idea of being able to relate to someone who may be going through something similar is a beautiful thing to me.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Situational awareness: what I mean by that is not just being aware of your physical situation but your spiritual and mental one. Emotion has a way of clouding perception. It almost always does. Strive for understanding before reaction

Gratitude; a lot of times people don’t know what they have until they lose it. You don’t necessarily have to be ungrateful for something intentionally to not be showing it the proper gratitude. Anything You take for granted can be taken away.

Focus: even more so nowadays we live in a day and age where things are put in place to not only distract you but do so and lead you down a self-destructive path. Again these are points that I wish I had really reinforced to myself in the beginning of my journey because it would’ve saved me a couple of of headaches and from a whole Lotta problems. But honestly, I am grateful for the pain because you remember it. And it motivates you.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?

I have never met my real parents. The most impactful thing they ever did for me was abandoned me. I was adopted at six months old by a Jehovah’s Witness family.. I didn’t know that I was adopted until an altercation with my adopted mother on my 16th birthday. I was later separated from our congregation When I decided that I wanted to look into my biological family. I was also going through a lot of behavioral issues at that age. Pretty much acting out. I was living in a very abusive household both physically and mentally But I was by no means an easy Kid to deal with. Until this point in my life I thought that my adopted family was my biological one. So when my mother(adopted) dropped me off at a homeless shelter the same night I tried to overdose I felt like I had been abandoned a second time. The scenario played in my head for years. I’m grateful that I’ve had the opportunity to build and grow from this because my path almost ended several times by my own hand and by others. So I digress, to answer your question the most beneficial thing my parents ever did for me (both sets) was abandon me. It was not the ideal circumstance. Nor would it really ever be for anyone but I’m grateful for who I’ve become and the love I
have in my heart toward the family I have now.
