We recently connected with Carlos Webster and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Carlos, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I get my resilience from the women in my life. I get my resilience from my mother and my aunts, who always worked day and night to take care of my cousins and I. They always made sure we had everything that we needed, while sacrificing so much. I also get it from my sisters, who are thriving in their respective fields. They inspire me to keep trying to to reach new heights, in my career. I get resilience from my grandmother and great-grandmothers, who were the inspiration to my business. They always made a lot out of a little, and shared knowledge that will last generations. I get it from my daughter, who continues to grow into a beautiful young lady, and face new challenges in life. She pushes me to keep going, in order to give her a life that I could only dream of. And finally I get resilience from my Fiancée. She is the hardest working person that I know. Her passion and drive, motivates me to try to match her energy and be a better me. When you are surrounded by women like that, you have no choice but to be hardworking, strong, and resilient.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Hello, My name is Carlos Webster, owner of Sweet Josephine’s Fine Bakery. We are a small business based in Horn Lake, MS. We strive to satisfy your sweet tooth, one dessert at a time. I specialize in custom cakes, and miniature cheesecake. I offer a variety of cheesecake flavors (over 20) and I am constantly looking for more to try. We cater parties, weddings, birthdays, etc. We also vender at a variety of events, including local pop-up shops. We are currently a home based business, but are working to expand into a brick and mortar in near future.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Communication is key. Always have an opening line of communication with customers, business partners and associates. Never leave any gray areas to insure that everyone is on the same page.
2. Time management is highly important. Time is money, and you don’t want to waste it. Plan accordingly and stay organized so that your business runs smoothly.
3. Have confidence in yourself. Don’t second guess yourself because it shows in your work. Be confident in your skills, that you worked countless hours to obtain.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
My biggest area of growth been, believing in myself more. I am very sensitive about my art, as most artists are, and I sometimes lose confidence in my skills. I have gotten better at realizing that I am very good at what I do. And though I have a lot to learn, I am miles ahead from where I started. I am more excited to face me things that challenge my skills.
