Meet Jason Tull

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jason Tull. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jason below.

Jason, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

In 1999 I was given a pair of clippers from my father for Christmas . I was going to a barbershop in neighborhood my dad was not so thrilled about and I was always getting my haircut so the clippers were a way to cut my hair from home and also tighten my friends up as well.
In July of 2000 I was incarcerated and ended up becoming the guy on the unit that everyone asked for a haircut. My gift started to develop inside along with my art work over the next 39 months. Upon my release I continued to cut my hair and those around me within transition settings in west Baltimore. Meanwhile managing transition homes and working a job at McDonald’s downtown, one day I prayed and asked God for an opportunity to use my gifts and talents making a living from them and within months I was linked with a master barber and under an apprentice license cutting in a shop in east Baltimore. I have been cutting now as a professional since December 2005. I have worked at two shops until I reached the location I’ve been at now for 12 years. I operate as a small business owner in a studio full time. Giving back with volunteeed haircuts is one of the ways I built the foundation of my business. Cutting in homeless shelters, transition settings, back to school events and sharp dressed man. I am truly grateful for the privilege to do what I am doing and give all praise to Jesus Christ for all that I do. It is all because of Him.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I am a licensed barber and small business owner who operates a barber studio, create and sell art, retail products and provide top quality service to my demographic. I also volunteer my time and haircuts to those in need through various organizations and events. I also sell art work from artists in my studio and create art as well. I love connecting and interacting with people thru the skills God has given me and love to see how much a haircut and some love can transform a persons life. I enjoy seeing the countenance lifted of those that I serve. I continue to work on honing my craft to perfection and building my business each day and stay open for new and exciting opportunities to use my talents to be a blessing.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Persistence/patience, art, loving what I do and my knowledge of God(knowing God). I would say that first, knowing God is what enabled me to know who I am and continue to learn who I am as a person, and recognize my gifts and abilities and how to properly use them in a way to help others is major and foremost. He has given me the faith to pursue this calling and to have boldness and courage to carry out the commitment. Patience and persistence in being able to continue and to grow thru all of the challenges and setbacks and obstacles that have been in my life. Without that I would have quit a long time ago. And I would also include that I have such a love for what I do. That has kept me solid in the seasons of my life where things got stagnant, boring or so challenging that I would question things. Loving what I do has made it not even seem like work almost the entire time. And art because I started out as an artist as a young age. I’ve never really developed my artistic abilities like maybe some professionals have but it is the foundation for what I do. Drawing and blending were skills that I developed early on and it transitioned to barbering as a profession. I love art and it is an amazing expression in my life.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

When I feel overwhelmed I look to God. Look to him in worship, prayer and seeking His face in His word. I learned early in walking with God that I can’t lead myself and looking toHim that is the creator of all things has the answer to whatever it is I’m facing . I realize that I always need Hos help , strength and guidance. Life is too big and impossible to figure out alone. And in looking to God He places the right people opportunities and resources in my path. Too many of life’s issues are just too big without Him.
