Meet Nancy Naadei Kotei-Sass

We were lucky to catch up with Nancy Naadei Kotei-Sass recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Nancy Naadei, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?

When I find myself as the only one in the room who looks like me, I have discovered the power in appreciating myself and relying on my inner strength. Believing in my convictions drives me to pursue them relentlessly. Being the sole representative does not invalidate my ideas; rather, it marks a new chapter. I seize the chance to forge something remarkable from it, turning opportunity into a canvas for creating beauty.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I am the owner of Kacy’s Delight, where I bring my love for baking to life by creating delicious and beautifully crafted treats. What excites me most about my work is my ability to turn simple ingredients into something that connects people to flavors from Africa.

What makes my business special is the dedication to quality, creativity, and a personal touch in every order. I believe that pastries are more than just desserts—they create memories, celebrate milestones, and bring people together. Beyond baking, I also have a deep passion for giving back. I donate pastries and baked goods to the homeless and support those in need because I believe that everyone deserves a taste of warmth and kindness, no matter their circumstances.

Right now, I am focused on expanding my offerings and reaching more customers who appreciate artisanal baked goods. My goal is to continue growing while staying true to the passion, craftsmanship, and community service that make my pastries unique.
I would love for more people to experience the love and care that goes into each creation, and I am always looking for new ways to bring sweetness not just into the lives of my customers, but also into the hearts of those who need it most.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back, three key qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are passion, resilience, and community-mindedness.

-Creativity and passion for Baking – Loving what I do has been the driving force behind my business. Passion fuels the long hours, experimentation with flavors, and the desire to keep improving. For those starting out, my advice is to stay curious and be willing to learn always. Whether it is taking a class, watching tutorials, or simply practicing new techniques, growth comes from continuous learning.
– Resilience and Perseverance – Every journey comes with challenges, from setbacks in business to perfecting a recipe that is not working. What has kept me going is my ability to push through difficulties and stay committed to my vision. For those starting out, expect obstacles, but do not let them define you. Keep going, learn from failures, and use them as stepping stones to success.
– Community and Giving Back – Beyond just baking, I have found purpose in using my business to make a difference. Sharing my pastries with the homeless and supporting those in need has reinforced my belief that success isn’t just about profit—it’s about impact. For those beginning their journey, I encourage looking for ways to connect with and uplift your community. Building meaningful relationships with customers and giving back will not only set you apart but will also bring deep fulfillment.

My biggest piece of advice is to: believe in yourself, stay consistent, and embrace the journey. Every small step forward leads to something greater!

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

My husband, family, and loved ones have been the most instrumental in helping me overcome challenges and developing the essential skills needed for success. Their unwavering support, encouragement, and belief in me have kept me going, even during the toughest times. Whether it is offering advice, lending a helping hand, or simply being there to uplift me, they have played a crucial role in my journey. Their love and support reminds me of the reason why I started and they continue to push me to reach greater heights.
