Meet Walt Doyle

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Walt Doyle a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Walt with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?

I try to take my drive and grind to get better as a DJ from outside sources. When I was younger I had no musical background whatsoever, and I got made fun of a lot for wanting to try and build a career in music. As I got older I had people gave me nice feedback on the projects I was working on, and while it was sincere, I could tell that people didn’t always take my ambitions sincerely. So while it might seem silly, it’s this lack of respect from others that keeps me going. When I finally get to a high enough point, that younger version of me will have the vindication of proving them all wrong. I’m a competitive person and this slight has kept the fire burning inside of me for 20 years and counting.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I am a DJ and occasional producer, but my heart will always be on the DJ side. I really enjoy getting up on stage and performing in front of people and entertain them for their night out. I don’t have one specific genre I like, I honestly do like them all. I think my music knowledge allows me to be a perfect chameleon – Friday night I can slide into an EDM gig, follow it up with a Top 40 night at a local bar. Due to this variety, the only professional goal I have is to continue DJing until I physically can’t anymore.
This year is projecting to be my biggest one yet. I’m coming up on the 1 year anniversary of my own radio show, and I’m playing my first festival in Boise, Idaho. I’m hoping I can continue to build on these milestones into even bigger and better things.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

The first would be patience. When I was younger I thought one great gig or one hit song would change my life would change overnight, but unfortunately that’s not the case. Having the patience to keep grinding and staying the course will provide great long term results.
Secondly, being professional. I have had a day job for the entirety of this journey, so I understand the importance of being professional when dealing with clients. I feel that this knowledge has transferred over very well into the music side of things, and while we may all be artists, this is still a business. Whether it is club, a record label, an event production company, that’s hired me, they are asking me to do a job and being professional is of the utmost importance.
Thirdly, understanding song structure. Since I have no formal musical training, knowing song structure has made it much easier when transitioning from song to song and genre to genre. It helps with the flow of the evening and keeps the energy where it needs to be. One wrong transition at the wrong part of the song can tank a dance floor in a hurry.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

That person would have to be my wife. When I have had days or sometimes weeks where I’m having regrets, or self doubt, she has always been there to listen and help provide the steady hand to keep me going. This is a tough journey and there have been many times where I have questioned whether the payoff is going to be worth it. But when those thoughts hit me, she’s the first one there to help push me along and get me to believe in my self.
