Meet Adam Blaylock

We were lucky to catch up with Adam Blaylock recently and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Adam with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?

Honestly, I’d say I get my work ethic from somewhere between Dave Grohl and Kevin Smith. Being a middle child from a middle-class family from an almost unknown town in Arizona, any dreams I had about being seen or enjoyed by the masses seems far from my reach. So my creative endeavors from an early age where always inspired by the greats of my time, but never genuinely expecting to find myself listed among them. Then came the 90’s. And the nobodies of the world were all of the sudden finding themselves and their art catapulted into the limelight. So my ambitions found a source of inspiration to find ways to do what they did. And then I watched over the years as entertainers like Dave and Kevin never lost their independence spirit. They just kept doing what they did and making what they made. Similarly, I’ve tried to always keep in mind that the things that I do may never reached that heights that I dreamed they would, but that doesn’t mean that I should just stay on my couch and leave them as fanciful ideas in my head. And so I keep creating. And keep swinging for the fences.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

Adam Blaylock is a singer/songwriter from Mesa, Arizona, whose musical journey began in the early-1980’s with Top 40 hits and country music before discovering grunge and punk rock in the mid-1990s. Influenced by bands like Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Green Day, and Alice In Chains, he picked up the guitar and eventually became a fixture in the Arizona pop-punk scene, performing with local bands like Curbside High, The Heartless, and several popular tribute bands. In 2011, Blaylock launched his solo project, EveningTheScore, releasing multiple albums, including Farewell, Aquarius and Panic.

In 2017 he broke into the world of podcasting with his show “A Guy, A Car, And A Podcast”. During an almost 3 year run of anything from freeform solo episodes to collecting interviews with friends, family, and fellow entertainers, he pushed the format into new realms by shooting and releasing a podcast documentary called “Back to the ‘Burgh”, detailing his time as a Mormon missionary in the early 2000s in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He also composed the soundtrack for the film, currently available across streaming platforms. His project EveningTheScore continues to feature collaborations with local musicians, including contributions from Jim Wilcox of Authority Zero, while showcasing Blaylock’s evolution as both a songwriter and performer. The establishment of Blayrock Records, Blayrock Films, and Blayrock Audio marks Adam’s long-held desire to use his experience and his network of contacts in the entertainment industry to help find, develop, and elevate other performers, artists, and storytellers.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Dare to dream. Have the courage to nerd out about your field of interest. Listen to your friends and fans, but stay true to what makes sense to you.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?

I’d say the number one obstacle I’m facing right now is having a truly original idea without the reputation or the clout to maximize it’s potential ‘Heart Songs: The Podcast” stands to give a platform to people of all levels of success and vision to share their stories through the unique lens of how music specifically has impacted and influenced their journey. But being an independent artist of almost no renown, I’m working as hard and as smart as I can manage to both promote the podcast and reach out through any channels available to intrigue and acquire the level of guests that can bring a wider audience to the show and, hopefully thus, attract even more important and intriguing guests.
