We recently connected with Kayci Chisholm and have shared our conversation below.
Kayci, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
My confidence and self-esteem grew through my journey as a designer, where I learned to embrace my creativity and trust my vision. Fashion has always been my form of self-expression, and with each collection, I’ve stepped further into my power. Seeing my designs come to life and empowering others through my work has reinforced my belief in myself. Confidence isn’t about being perfect—it’s about owning who you are and expressing it unapologetically.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I love creating unique art, and my journey has been anything but ordinary. Transitioning from working as an assistant for a cancer research study at Tuskegee University to designing part-time, and now fully immersing myself in my passion for fashion, has been an incredible blessing.
Right now, I’m focused on my next project for Fashion Week—I always showcase my collections in September, and I’m also expanding with more pop-ups during February Fashion Week. Additionally, I’m rebranding my e-commerce brand, Kayphoria, which serves as the foundation for four categories: Kayphoria Men & Women, Kayphoria X Intimate, and Kayphoria X Avant-Garde Couture. I’m excited for this next chapter and can’t wait to share what’s coming!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, three key qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are resilience, creativity, and adaptability.
1. Resilience – The fashion industry comes with challenges, and setbacks are inevitable. Staying committed to my vision despite obstacles has been crucial. For those just starting, understand that rejection and failures are part of the process—use them as fuel to grow.
2. Creativity – Fashion is an art form, and standing out requires pushing boundaries and staying true to your unique perspective. I’ve learned that the best designs come from authenticity. To develop this, constantly seek inspiration, experiment with new ideas, and never be afraid to take risks.
3. Adaptability – The industry is always evolving, from trends to technology. Being able to pivot and embrace change has helped me stay ahead. My advice? Stay open to learning—whether it’s through new techniques, business strategies, or industry shifts, always be a student of your craft.
For anyone early in their journey, believe in your vision, stay persistent, and continue refining your skills. Success doesn’t happen overnight, but with passion and dedication, you’ll carve out your own space in the industry.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
The biggest area of growth for me in the last 12 months has been accepting my peace with God. I’ve learned to tune out the noise around me and fully trust in the purpose He has placed on my life. Every day, I commit to working and designing because I know that with each step forward—whether it’s creating, producing content, or simply using my time wisely—I am growing. This journey has taught me that consistency and faith go hand in hand, and as long as I keep moving with intention, I am exactly where I need to be.
