Meet Dany Crooks

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dany Crooks. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dany below.

Dany, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

I don’t think you ever really get over this! Especially this early on in my career, it’s something that I struggle with daily! But I can tell you what helped! Ilona Maher, yes, USA’s rugby bronze medalist Ilona Maher, said something along the lines of, “I don’t have imposter syndrome because I’ve worked hard to get where I am, and, “It’s okay feel like you deserve something.” So when my imposter syndrome starts to act up, I tell it to KICK ROCKS and refocus on what needs to get done.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

Hi! I’m Dany! I’m a romantasy author who believes in creating worlds worth fighting for with slow burn romances that make you kick your feet with every kiss. I’ve always been a story teller but never thought I’d take that to the big leagues, so to speak, and follow this crazy dream that never felt attainable for someone who didn’t even finish college.

My debut, Revenge of the Forgotten, came out September 13, 2024. It follows Vega and Bridger, two ex’s now on opposites sides of a dawning war. But before they were enemies, they were lovers and their lives looked a lot different. Bridger wasn’t the Commander of Tolevarre and Vega wasn’t cursed to forget by her very own sister.

Coming March 28, 2025 is Heart of the Villain. The prequel to the events in Revenge of the Forgotten, we find out why the villain becomes who she is. After years of abuse, Marlena snaps, and the only thing standing in her way is a powerless girl she never should have fallen in love with.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

I think every good storyteller needs to first be a reader at heart. You have to learn how to fall in love with the words and characters on a page before creating that for others. You have to be persistent and always show up for yourself, even when you don’t want to. Not only are you your own worst enemy but you’re also your characters very first fan! If you can’t show up for you, show up for them. And really the last piece is loving what you do! Being passionate about what you’re doing, no matter what you’re doing, is the only way you’re going to do anything worthwhile.

As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue will always and forever be one of my favorite books. It follows a woman who’s been cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets but is given immortality in return. As soon as she’s out of their sight, she never existed to them. Addie’s perseverance to be remembered and leave her mark reminds me every day to fight even when it feels like no one can see you… because one day, your day will come and it’ll be better than you ever thought it could be.
