We were lucky to catch up with Dr. Joanna Consiglio recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dr. Joanna, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Overcoming imposter syndrome has been an ongoing process, but for me, it started with recognizing that no one has all the answers—even the most experienced professionals are always learning. When I started my chiropractic practice, I felt the pressure of wearing multiple hats: being the doctor, the business owner, the marketer, and everything in between. It was easy to doubt myself when comparing my journey to others who seemed to have it all figured out.
What helped me was shifting my focus from feeling like an expert to becoming an expert. I leaned into continuous learning—attending advanced courses, reading research, and refining my treatment techniques. The more I expanded my knowledge, the more confidence I gained in my abilities.
Another key piece was owning my unique approach. I started my practice because I wanted to offer personalized, evidence-based care without the one-size-fits-all treatment plans I saw elsewhere. When I reminded myself why I do what I do and saw the impact on my patients, the self-doubt faded.
Lastly, I surrounded myself with mentors and like-minded professionals. Talking with others who had been through similar struggles helped me realize that imposter syndrome is normal—it’s a sign that you care about what you do. Now, instead of letting doubt hold me back, I use it as fuel to keep improving and providing the best care possible.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am Dr. Joanna Consiglio, and I run Modern Motion Chiropractic, where we specialize in helping active individuals stay strong, mobile, and pain-free. My practice focuses on a combination of chiropractic care, acupuncture, and soft tissue therapy to treat musculoskeletal conditions, enhance sports performance, and address internal health issues naturally.
What makes Modern Motion Chiropractic unique is our personalized, evidence-based approach—we don’t do cookie-cutter treatment plans. Instead, we take the time to understand each patient’s lifestyle, goals, and movement patterns to develop a customized care plan. Whether it’s a runner preparing for a marathon, or someone looking for natural solutions to chronic pain, my goal is to get them back to doing what they love as efficiently as possible.
I started my practice after experiencing my own struggles with traditional chiropractic care. I had a significant lower back injury while training for marathons, and the quick, standard adjustments I received didn’t fully solve the issue. That led me to explore different treatment styles, combining adjustments, muscle work, acupuncture, and targeted rehab—an approach that ultimately helped me recover and inspired the way I practice today.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, three key qualities have had the biggest impact on my journey: adaptability and problem-solving, deep knowledge and continuous learning, and building relationships and earning trust. When I started my practice, I quickly realized that being a great chiropractor wasn’t enough—I had to learn how to run a business, market my services, and manage everything on my own. The ability to adapt and figure things out on the fly has been crucial. Whether it’s adjusting my treatment approach for a complex case or refining my business model, problem-solving is an everyday skill. My advice for those early in their journey is to embrace a growth mindset. Instead of getting overwhelmed by what you don’t know, approach challenges like a puzzle to solve. Read, take courses, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to experiment. The best way to learn is by doing.
Another major factor in my success has been investing in deep knowledge and continuous learning. One of the most valuable things I’ve done is pursue ongoing education—not just in chiropractic, but in acupuncture, soft tissue work, rehab, and sports performance. The more knowledge I have, the better I can help my patients and set myself apart from other providers. My advice is to stay curious. The people who excel in their field never stop learning. If you’re early in your journey, seek out mentors, attend workshops, and dive deep into your craft. The more knowledge you gain, the more confident and effective you’ll become.
Finally, building relationships and earning trust has been just as important as clinical expertise. Healthcare is personal. People come to me because they’re in pain and need solutions they can trust. Taking the time to listen, understand their goals, and show that I genuinely care has been crucial. Patients who trust you will not only return but also refer others. My advice is to focus on connection, not just expertise. Whether you’re in healthcare, business, or another field, relationships matter. Listen more than you talk, be transparent, and always act with integrity. People can tell when you truly care, and that’s what sets you apart. At the end of the day, success isn’t about having all the answers from the start—it’s about staying adaptable, committed to learning, and focused on building real relationships. If you can do that, you’ll be ahead of the game.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed, I take a step back and focus on controlling what I can. Running a business, treating patients, and handling everything else that comes with it can sometimes feel like too much, but I’ve learned that stress often comes from trying to do everything at once. Breaking things down into manageable steps helps me regain control and stay productive.
One of the biggest strategies that works for me is prioritization—figuring out what actually needs to get done versus what can wait. I like to list out my tasks and focus on the top 2-3 most important ones for the day instead of trying to tackle everything at once. I’ve also learned that setting boundaries is key—it’s easy to feel like I need to be available 24/7, but giving myself structured work hours and designated time to recharge makes a huge difference.
On a personal level, movement is my reset button. Whether it’s going for a run, getting outside for fresh air, or even just stepping away for a quick walk, physical activity helps me clear my head and get back on track. I also make sure to check in with my basics—sleep, nutrition, and hydration, because when those are off, stress feels ten times worse.
My advice for anyone struggling with feeling overwhelmed is to zoom out and take things one step at a time. You don’t have to solve everything all at once. Break things down, prioritize what really matters, and don’t be afraid to take a step back when needed. Sometimes, the best thing you can do is pause, reset, and come back with a clearer mind.
