We were lucky to catch up with Jag Savant recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jag, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
Confidence isn’t something you’re born with; it’s something you learn and develop over time. When I was younger, I lacked confidence—speaking in front of a class made me nervous, and I struggled to express my ideas. But I was determined to share my story because I knew it was more important than my fear. Out of 8 billion people on this planet, only I experience the world through my eyes, and that realization made me understand that my voice mattered.
Overcoming my insecurities wasn’t easy—I had to stumble and embarrass myself countless times before I finally felt free to express myself. The most important step in my journey to confidence was learning to understand, accept, and love myself without judgment. We are often our own worst critics, and I had to become mindful of when I was being too harsh on myself.
Taking a yoga class helped me cultivate self-acceptance. I learned meditation techniques to ground myself in moments of anxiety. Yoga offers asanas and mudras that boost confidence, as well as breathing and meditation practices that help create inner stability. These tools became essential in my journey toward self-assurance.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a photo artist based in Los Angeles, exploring themes of capitalism, systemic racism, love, and femininity. My work is deeply influenced by my cultural heritage and personal experiences, embracing a raw creative process that rejects capitalist excess. In one project, I collected and photographed my own garbage to highlight the cycle of overproduction and overconsumption.
My passion for photography began with my maternal grandfather, a professional photographer and artist, who inspired me to see the world through a lens. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Animation and Visual Effects from Mumbai and an MFA in Photography from the New York Film Academy in Los Angeles.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, the three skills or qualities that have played a major role in my journey are effective communication, resilience, and authenticity. Effective communication has been essential in helping me connect with others, articulate my ideas, and navigate both opportunities and challenges. It has allowed me to collaborate with a diverse range of people and build meaningful relationships. Resilience has been crucial, especially when faced with setbacks or resistance. It’s not always an easy path, but my ability to persevere through difficulties, learn from failures, and keep pushing forward has allowed me to grow both personally and professionally. Lastly, authenticity has been at the core of my work. Staying true to myself, embracing my cultural heritage, and drawing from my personal experiences has not only shaped my creative process but also strengthened my connection with my audience. These qualities have been integral in my journey, and I believe they are fundamental to creating work that is both impactful and meaningful.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most important thing my parents did for me wasn’t give me luxury—it was teaching me the value of hard work and self-reliance. They made sure I had the basic necessities, but they always emphasized that if I wanted the luxuries in life, I would have to earn them myself. This mindset shaped me in profound ways. It instilled in me a strong sense of determination and the understanding that nothing worthwhile comes easily. I learned that to truly appreciate the things I desire, I have to put in the effort, make sacrifices, and fight for them. This foundation of self-sufficiency and resilience has been a driving force in my life, pushing me to strive for more and never settle for less.
