We recently connected with David Freeman and have shared our conversation below.
David, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us today. We’re excited to dive into your story and your work, but first let’s start with a broader topic that might be stopping many of our readers from pursuing their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. How have you managed to persist despite haters and nay-sayers that inevitably follow folks who are doing something unique, special or off the beaten path?
Don’t take what they say as fact. Prove them wrong.
All my life, I’ve had people tell me I ‘can’t do it.’ If I had believed them, I wouldn’t have achieved anything.
I remember my high school tuba section leader doubting me—making it clear he didn’t think I had what it took. Instead of letting that discourage me, I used it as fuel. I worked harder, pushed past expectations, and ultimately surpassed what he thought was possible for me. That moment reinforced a mindset I carry in everything I do: other people’s doubts are not my reality.
Whether it’s launching businesses, advising artists on career transitions, or creating platforms like OrchestraAuditions.com, I’ve learned that skepticism is just part of the journey. The best response isn’t arguing—it’s proving them wrong through results.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I founded OrchestraAuditions.com, a platform designed to make the orchestral audition process more transparent and accessible. As a musician myself, I was frustrated by how difficult it was to find up-to-date audition postings—I had to check multiple websites, orchestra pages, and forums just to piece together a full picture. So, I built OrchestraAuditions.com to be a one-stop-shop where musicians can easily find all available auditions in the US.
A central part of what we offer is our audition updates email newsletter, which keeps musicians informed about the latest audition postings directly in their inbox. Instead of constantly searching for opportunities, musicians can rely on us to deliver the most up-to-date listings, making the audition process much more efficient.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, I’d say the three most impactful qualities in my journey have been resilience, adaptability, and persistence.
Resilience: In both music and business, setbacks are inevitable. What truly matters is how you bounce back. I’ve faced doubters, rejection, and obstacles, but I’ve learned to view them as opportunities for growth. Resilience allows you to push through difficult times and stay committed to your vision. For those early in their journey, I’d advise embracing failure as part of the process and using it to fuel your next steps.
Adaptability: The ability to pivot and adapt to changing circumstances has been essential, especially as I’ve worked in both the music industry and the entrepreneurial space. Whether adjusting to the changing needs of musicians or navigating the shifting landscape of technology, being adaptable is crucial. My advice here is to stay open to learning and recognize that growth often comes from unexpected directions.
Persistence: The road to success isn’t always smooth or fast, and there are times when progress feels slow. However, staying persistent—continuing to push forward, even when results are not immediate—has been one of the most crucial factors in my success. Whether launching OrchestraAuditions.com or building my career as a business leader outside of music, persistence has allowed me to outlast challenges and outwork setbacks. My advice is to keep moving forward, no matter how small the steps. Progress is progress, and consistency will get you where you want to go.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client is someone who is passionate, open to growth, and ready to embrace change. Whether they’re a musician navigating auditions or an artist transitioning careers, I work best with individuals who are self-reflective, willing to take action, and understand that success is a blend of talent, strategy, and persistence. Clients who value community and are eager to make an impact, not just in their own careers but within their industry, are a perfect fit for my services.
