Meet Sage X Price

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sage X Price a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Sage X, we are so deeply grateful to you for opening up about your journey with mental health in the hops that it can help someone who might be going through something similar. Can you talk to us about your mental health journey and how you overcame or persisted despite any issues? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.

An overall answer to this question can be tough, everyday is a bit different and sometimes the same thing you thought you got over can affect you in a whole different way depending on the day. But if I had to give one I would say putting it into the art has been the number one thing that has helped me push through. I think the whole “put it into the art” thing has become a bit of a cliche because it can be a bit of an overused term, the power of the statement still holds though. Art might not solve everything in life but I think it can put you down a healthier path instead of falling victim to your mental space. Thankfully in my situation my art has allowed me to have an outlet, it’s also giving me a constant reason to overcome any mental challenges I may have.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I’m a singer and rapper with a background in production in audio engineering. I produce and engineer all of my own stuff as well as other artists work! To me the most exciting thing about all of that is being able to take songs that I made from my room and hear them in front of a full crowd of people. Touring without a doubt is the most fun about music to me. Having the opportunity to meet the people who listen to my music and see how it effects them in real time is a touching moment to say the least. My music is pretty much a public diary filled with details on things I’ve been through, things I want to do, and how my brain balances all of these different instances.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

My work ethic, obsession and craziness. The obsession fuels the work ethic and all of that is born from just a little bit of crazy. I think only one of those qualities can be developed and improved upon and that’s the work ethic part. The obsession of music and craziness about it, or any other passion, is something you either feel or don’t. But I think the work ethic part of things can be further improved upon by, learning how to avoid burnout, simplifying tasks and objectives by taking them one at a time, and learning how to balance life with “work”. I’ll be honest I’m not really good at those things but giving myself a day a week to chill has really helped me out. For me the issues doesn’t reside in keeping the work ethic going, but learning how to to turn it off so I don’t burn out.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?

Introduce me to music and supporting my decision to go after it. I’m forever grateful to them for that.
