We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Solanyely Ruiz a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Solanyely , we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I draw my resilience from the desire to fulfill my dreams: I am an immigrant and I discovered resilience when it was the only option I had to avoid failure. It was not easy to discover it, I had a long period of adaptation to conquer it.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a dreamer who has learned to conquer her dreams. Since I was little I dreamed of being a writer and finally at the age of thirty-five I wrote my first book, just after I battled with the impostor syndrome. I must confess that the strength I didn’t have, I got it from other writers. I have read many books and in them I find stories of overcoming other people that motivate me that mine can also have a happy ending.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three qualities that have led me to achieve my goals are: always dreaming, taking someone who already has what I want as a reference and accepting demotivation as part of the process, thus respecting each part of my process. If you are starting a project, use a reference pattern to move forward. By seeing someone’s career you will see that it is not impossible to achieve it. You should also surround yourself with things or places that motivate you.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
The book: The Power is Within You, by Louise Hay played a fundamental role when I was twenty-one because it allowed me to know that I had powers. The pearl of wisdom is to learn the unknown; many people interfere in our behavior and plant limitations that we do not have. Getting out of those limitations leads us to achieve our goals.
