Jasmine, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
My optimism come from the joy and representation Melanated mermaids parties bring to little Black girls. Seeing their faces light up when they see a mermaid that looks like them fuels my spirit. Plus, we aren’t just entertainment —Im also teaching water safety while helping kids conquer fears, and creating a magical space where they feel seen and included. When parents show their gratitude, it adds even more warmth to what I do. It’s like my work is a mix of healing, joy, and purpose, and that energy naturally keeps my outlook bright!
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Jasmine Hunter AKA Mermaid Amia koi. I am a certified lifeguard, swimming instructor, professional mermaid performer and the owner of melanated mermaids parties.
Our business is based in Atlanta Georgia, so being a landlocked mermaid makes it quite difficult to find my pod and collaborate with other merfolk. So to remedy that I have decided that this year 2025 melanated mermaids parties will be launching our website and will be hiring young and inspiring mermaids to join our pod! Our website will also offer prices for our birthday package plans corporate events and photo shoots. I am super excited for this new season that I can feel it beaming from within! Stay tuned we have great things coming!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
As of now I am the sole owner and operator of melanated mermaids parties, so that means I have to do all the footwork, all the digital work ect myself. With help at events from family and friends but being a perfectionist i prefer it that way. Every detail from my business name, our logo, our invoice design and website design I have done myself. Three skills I will say helped me looking back would be patience, persistence, and passion. The advice I have for our younger generation and Future entrepreneurs would be to never give up on yourself even when it seems you’re going nowhere eventually all your hard work will pay off. Be patient with yourself, be persistent about your goals, and never lose your passion even in the dark times because the sun will always shine after the Storm!
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
I would say my little sister has been my biggest fan and has been always been in my corner no matter what delusional idea I have! When I don’t know something most of the time I will ask her. My little sister showed me how to get my LLC for my business and also taught me some editing skills. She is also a business owner herself. She makes handmade eczema cream called Tri-Era care for people suffering like she did. To be honest she was my inspiration to start my own business because she gave me the push I needed when I doubted myself.
