We recently connected with Daria Pupysheva and have shared our conversation below.
Daria, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
One day, I realized a simple truth: confidence comes with experience. And it’s absolutely impossible to gain experience without taking action. The sooner you make a mistake, the sooner you’ll figure out how to fix it. If you don’t take any action, you won’t even be able to understand what could go wrong in the first place. It’s only through practice, only through action, that we learn how to navigate different situations.
Plus, I once heard an incredible phrase in a lecture that completely changed my understanding of confidence: 90% of our fears and the things we’re unsure about will never actually happen.
For example, I work as a makeup artist, and I used to be terrified of working with brides. I thought that every tiny movement I made would irritate them, that they would be extremely difficult clients, and that I wouldn’t be able to satisfy them no matter what I did. But how could I possibly know what was actually going on in a bride’s head and how she would behave if I had never worked with one before?
Only after attending multiple weddings and doing makeup for dozens of brides did I start to understand and develop my own approach. And believe me, I’ve never had a single truly unhappy client.
On top of that, once you establish your strategy and understand how to handle different situations, everything changes. Yes, challenging situations can and will arise—that’s completely normal. But now, you know how to react, what to say, how to respond, and what to offer. You also learn how to prevent certain issues before they even occur—because you have experience. And that experience is what helps you feel confident in yourself, your skills, and your achievements.
Looking back, before I started working with brides, my fears were overwhelming. I thought it was nearly impossible. I even believed that brides weren’t real people but rather aliens from another planet, incapable of normal communication. But in reality, 90% of the fears I had about working with brides never actually happened.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Of course, I’d be happy to answer this question.
My name is Daria, and I am a professional makeup artist. I have been working in this creative profession for 4.5 years now. I absolutely love working with clients, and I consider this to be one of my greatest strengths. In my opinion, a client-focused makeup artist is the most in-demand type of makeup artist.
When you work on photoshoots or fashion shows—which I have also done in my career—you are solely a professional. You are just a worker, and your only job is to demonstrate your technical skills, complete the work on time, and ensure the final result meets expectations. But when you work with private clients, it’s a completely different experience. The expectations from you as a specialist go far beyond just professional skills. In fact, I’d say that personal qualities are even more important than professional ones in this case.
Because people come to people. People choose people. And clients will always return to you as a professional if, first and foremost, you are a pleasant person to work with—someone who makes them feel comfortable, who doesn’t pressure them, but instead boosts their confidence and supports them.
For example, when I lived in Mexico, my regular clients would share some of their most personal stories with me. I knew what was happening in their lives—who was getting married, who was expecting a baby. I knew about their worries, their emotional struggles, the things they found hard to talk about. And I’m certain they valued me not just for my skills but for our conversations, for the fact that I could offer advice, provide emotional support, and brighten their day simply by showering them with compliments.
I truly believe that my ability to connect with people and find a personal approach for each client is my superpower. That’s why I love working with clients one-on-one, in person. I love teaching personal makeup lessons. I always strive to understand what my client wants to achieve, how they want to see themselves in the mirror. And I do my best to bring that vision to life as closely as possible.
So, if you’ve ever had a disappointing experience with a makeup artist, I invite you to work with me. I would love to show you that your experience with a makeup artist can—and should—be nothing but positive. That you will smile at your reflection in the mirror and truly enjoy the process.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I believe that the most important qualities in the beginning are discipline and consistency, faith in yourself and your abilities, and a genuine love for what you do. This is the foundation that everyone should build and cultivate within themselves in order to succeed in any field.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Since I recently moved, I believe that collaborations with creative people are an absolute must-have for me. That’s why I’d be more than happy to hear from photographers, stylists, and models. If you have a great idea, let’s bring it to life!
I love meeting new people, and I truly believe that building connections and communication skills are some of the most important qualities for any professional. So don’t hesitate to reach out if you’d like to work with me!
