Meet Justin Bishop

We were lucky to catch up with Justin Bishop recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Justin, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?

I have found confidence in art to be quite an interesting thing as there are no real rules to follow or criteria to achieve. I feel that confidence especially in art really only comes from inside. For me having confidence in my abilities has come from years of practice and failure that has let me try many things in order to develop my “artistic eye” and the confidence to feel that I know how to realize my vision even when that vision isn’t something I can fiscally see in front of me.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

Teto Creations is my personal business and passion project. It started as a few costume sewing projects here and there for my friends and quickly turned into a substantial queue of people looking to ave custom work done. Now I am at a point where I take commissions when I can and open a few slots. I make a wide variety of costume parts mostly fursuit related including full body costumes, tails, hand paws and heads as well as things like simple custom plushies custom 3d molding/printing and much more.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Pittance, hand sewing and versatility are the 3 skills I would say have played the biggest roll in my journey. Any art form will take much pittance to learn as you will have to try and fail many times before you are able to produce much of anything. I started hand sewing at a very young age and I definitely think this helped more than anything to get me started smoothly, I would recommend this as the #1 skill to learn foe anyone who wants to start making costumes as even after you learn to sew on the machine you will still use it a lot and its something you can always get faster and better at. I also think it is important to be versatility even if you have no idea what you are doing when you start just try new things, there are so many materials that can produce amazing results if you learn to use them so I highly recommend being a “jack of all trades” even if you aren’t out to master any of them.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

I love to collaborate with other artists whenever I get the chance I basically give out any knowledge I have whenever I get the chance because I love to see what people can make when they are given a bit of direction! I also love to use parts from other artists in my projects as well as make parts to be used by other artists. Many costumes have my 3d-printed or silicone cast parts in them. If you are looking to have a custom part designed and printed or manufactured in some other way I would love to hear you out! Or if you have a unique manufacturing processes you like to use in your hobby I always love to hear about that too!
