Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shania Alcee. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Shania with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My work ethic comes from my always-craving stability. Wanting to work has always been something in my head from a young age. I knew to obtain the things that my mom couldn’t get me, I needed a job. I got my first job at 17 years old working for “Pret A Manger”, & that opened a door to a path of opportunities. Today I own a Nail business “Niyaa on Nails”, I’m a nurse & also have 2 amazing kids who keep me on my toes. The motivation & support is even stronger, & that’s where my work hustle comes from!
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a Licensed Practical Nurse & love what I do. However, what I’ve come to love & take pride in is my nail business “Niyaa on Nails” that I built from scratch in Greenpoint, NYC. Nails did not only bring out my creativity but it brought out my leadership skills. What started as a side hustle became my 2nd child that I put tears, money & hard work into. My business started as a quick side job in my living room during the pandemic. The ladies would write post after post dreading their nails, hair, etc. So I thought to myself why not pick up a hobby that was in demand? Quickly I decided I couldn’t do hair & you can only do so much with eyelashes, so nails it was! Over time I practiced for months at a time then branched out to getting my license. Before I knew it I had girls lined up in my hallway which was truly an unbelievable feeling. Now today the wow unbelievable excitement that I had still lingers. 5 years in the beauty industry has not only opened doors but has enhanced my character. I get fulfillment & appreciation in all the campaign shoots, clients, celebrities, & wellness nail retreats that I do. I currently work side by side with some truly amazing & talented individuals at “Hairenomics Mane Bar”. This is only a chapter of my journey, stay tuned for the rest of the book!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
– Just do it
We tend to scare ourselves with risks & what-ifs. But what if that risk turned out to be the life change that you need? You’ll never do what you set out to accomplish. It’ll just be another thought. Just do it!
– Do not forget to live
Being a mom, nurse & business owner does take its toll sometimes. But the one thing that helped me a lot was living my life in between the cracks. In my spare time, I would enjoy my friend’s company, travel, & do things I love to do. Yes, we all have work to do in life but we also have to live so there’s a balance.
– Open to Change
I’m not saying you have to turn your whole life around, (unless you do) but a bit of change isn’t a bad thing. If you only wear heels, try flats for a change. If you usually have long hair, try a haircut you might love it! Being open to change will always allow you to be adaptable to any situation.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
I’m an on-the-go kind of person 24/7 so when I finally get overwhelmed, I fully tap out & my brain shuts down. I power down, but that’s bound to happen when you take on more than you should. My advice is to accomplish your tasks in portions, stay focused & stay organized. We are still human but tend to think we can do robot work by taking on 300 different tasks & fitting them into one whole day of work. It’s okay to move at your speed the only time you’re on is yours.
