We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Morgan Prime. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Morgan below.
Hi Morgan, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
In my primary role leading operations in urban public education, I openly discuss having severe inattentive ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). I consider my neurodiversity a strength. My unique thought processes and hyper-focus are invaluable for innovative problem-solving in often-overlooked areas, specifically in education, like finance, technology, facilities, and security. I prioritize building strong, genuine relationships with all stakeholders—colleagues, students, and families—to create sustainable and inclusive environments.
With EventfulATL, I lead our Creative Caviar classes and events, challenging perceptions and democratizing access to caviar. As a Black woman in a space that has historically lacked minority representation, I break down barriers, demonstrating that anyone can enjoy this delicacy. I strive to create memorable experiences through knowledge and enthusiasm, connecting with diverse groups.
Overall, authenticity is paramount. Being true to myself fosters trust. I also prioritize continuous learning as essential. While there are several factors that contribute to me “being the only one in the room,” which can be extremely challenging, I thrive by embracing my unique qualities and focusing on positive impact.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Currently, I am passionate about the two roles I currently serve in. In my primary professional role, I absolutely love what I do in the urban public education sector. Despite not being a traditional educator, my job and those I manage have a significant impact on how schools operate, and on how students from low socioeconomic areas experience learning and the environment they are in for so much of their lives. When I am asked why I love what I do, I am quick to respond with “no day is ever the same.” I plan to continue to grow in this sector and continue to expand my reach beyond my current location.
On the personal side, being an instructor with EventfulATL has been incredible! Working in a more creative space has allowed me to gain new skills, while getting to speak about something I have loved for a long time, caviar! I get so excited during our events when I get to ask our participants if they have any previous experiences with caviar, and several people admit to my event being their first time.
At one of my events, you can expect a caviar experience filled with luxurious flavors and playful pairings in a relaxed, approachable setting. Perfect for both beginners and seasoned foodies, this workshop offers a delightful introduction to the world of caviar. You’ll explore a curated selection of caviar varieties, pairing them with unexpected treats like snack chips and chocolate, elevating your snacking experience to new heights. Guided by our passionate instructor, you’ll learn how everyday favorites can harmonize with the unique essence of caviar. Please join us for any of our events, including caviar. If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Adaptability and Resilience: The ability to adjust to change, bounce back from setbacks, and learn from mistakes. This is especially crucial in today’s rapidly evolving world.
2. Effective Communication: Clearly expressing ideas, actively listening, and tailoring your message to different audiences. This is essential for collaboration, leadership, and building relationships.
3. Knowing Strengths and Weaknesses: Internalizing what you are truly good at and what you are not so good at seems simple, but is extremely important when building and leading teams that are efficient and effective. Also, having this self-knowledge allows you to maximize what you can offer.
My advice for anyone early in their journey is to be open to criticism, even if it doesn’t seem helpful. Always find a different angle to look at situations!
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
They really impressed me with my reading and writing. This has enabled me to rise quickly in spaces I would not otherwise have the ability to go very far. However, because of my effective communication skills, I am given more opportunities to showcase my knowledge.
