We recently connected with Jess Evans and have shared our conversation below.
Jess, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
I keep my creativity alive by staying up to date on current trends! I will see something really exciting or new to the event space and immediately think up a plan to incorporate my own spin on the idea. I love how vast the internet is now, and how each platform can feel like your own personal Pinterest if you find the right algorithm!
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My name is Jess Evans. I am 31 years old with two wonderful children. I live in Northern Michigan, in the beautiful town of Traverse City. I am an event planner and on my favorite days, a party host.
My event business started as a tea party company for my daughter and has quickly expanded over the last year. I find many things incredibly enjoyable about the work that I do. I find the most joy in styling themes, building table-scapes, and curating menus. But, I’d have to say that my favorite part of all is the connections that I’ve made throughout my time as an event planner. I wanted to create this magical world for children with the Princess Tea parties and yet it’s turned into some of my own beautiful memories with the parents, friends, and family members joining.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
If I had to look back at my journey, the three qualities that have been the most instrumental in building my business have been passion, creativity, and maintaining a growth mindset.
The best advice I can give for the next person is to only start a business in something that you are enthusiastic about. It’s easy to get burnt out and fall complacent to your goals when the burning fiery desire to chase your dream has dissipated under the unavoidable hardships of building a brand.
I would also recommend collaborating in your community. Building relationships with like-minded people and bouncing ideas off each other is a great way to keep the sparks flying. Whenever I think of a great idea for an upcoming event, I try to incorporate another local business to magnify the outcome.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
When it comes to clientele, I am happy to work with anyone! My ideal client would be flexible, willing to see my vision, and be communicative. Party planning takes a lot of trust and mutual responsiveness to get the job done. So far, I have no horror stories and everyone has been great to work with!
