Meet Kamila Assylkhanova

We recently connected with Kamila Assylkhanova and have shared our conversation below.

Kamila , we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?

I have studied art for 10 years now; however on a regular basis, I keep questioning my skills and myself. In art, generally, every artist have to get used to the feeling of being imperfect and find a passion in it; otherwise, you will stuck and burn out eventually. I got through this process dozens of times and after another try – it’s still hurts – but the habit of continuous attempts moves you forward. Acknowledging that « Whatever that awaits me can happen, I will start over again » brings me confidence and peace.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

Currently, I’m an independent animator working on several projects, including short films, personal animations, and freelance work. After graduating from Algonquin College’s animation program, the industry collapsed. It’s been a hard time for mid-level and expert animators, and especially tough for my classmates and juniors at the beginning of their careers. It took me some time to accept things as they are and to start over, pivoting my dreams and creative values. In my plans, I see myself increasing my presence on social media and releasing several indie animations that I have been working on.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

The most important thing in an artist’s path is always passion — the desire to express yourself visually. Rules, practice, discipline, anatomy, composition, and observation all matter, but they must align with the joy you experience in the process of creating or maybe all the pain is worse for the result you reaching. Love what you do, and in low points, reignite your drive with the craving to create and share.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

I started an emotional journal not long ago, so far I would say it’s easiest way to figure out my mind flow. Animating and drawing is very similar way for me to overcome instability. An advice I would give on that is – build a strong connection with your inner self to be in control of your path and wellbeing.
