We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ajia Munns. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ajia below.
Ajia, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
My resilience comes from studying my ancestors. It’s something about knowing how great who you are after being told you were nothing. Understanding the great and long-lasting contributions black and indigenous people made all over the world is inspiring. The spirit of my people is most inspiring. Most of all I think I get it from my grandmother’s mother “MaMa” who is a pillar in our family history.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Oh, I love what I do. Many people call me a renaissance woman but they are too kind. My production company is Geminae Productions a multi-platform production company that aims to inspire the world through creative power centered around great storytelling, arts, and culture. Our name is from the Latin word “Geminae” meaning “twin.” I was conceived as a twin but born alone. The name pays homage to my unborn twin. I also act, write, and direct. The Last Hero short film shot in 2021 was my directorial debut and served as the first project under my production company. I find joy in mentoring and teaching mindfulness in schools all over the Los Angeles area. I believe in teaching the youth skills that will last a lifetime as well as all of us. I’m also a co-founder of BW Meditate which is an organization dedicated to bringing meditation to underserved communities. It was a long road to get to this fulfilling work.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three things that were most impactful on my journey were connecting with my inner being & healing, being brave & daring, and mindset.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
We never really talked about it when I was growing up but it was as if they saw something in me and were more than encouraging. They believed in me! My parents and grandparents never tried to change me in fact they all let me be. I was able to follow my dreams without any discouraging voices in my head…well other than my own but that can be overcome too. I want to take the time to thank them for believing in me. Deeply I appreciate you: my Mom Angela Banks, who says she’s my number one fan, Step-Dad Brandel Banks, Uncle George, Aunt Kathryn, Dad Jeffery Munns, Grandparents MaMa & PaPa, Jasper Munns, Sandy Munns, Jerome Scott, and my beloved grandmother Eula Hood. There are so many people on my journey who believed in me and I thank you too!
