Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lauren De Jesus. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lauren , sincerely appreciate your selflessness in agreeing to discuss your mental health journey and how you overcame and persisted despite the challenges. Please share with our readers how you overcame. For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
Like many others I’ve struggled with my mental health since I was a kid. I spent most of my childhood to young adult life being told I just had bad anxiety with bouts of depression.
I’ve been a hairstylist for over 10 years now and being in such a social environment has had it’s challenges whilst struggling with anxiety and people pleasing tendencies.
Last year , I got diagnosed with OCD. Finally starting therapy and trying to take control of my mental health. Being a small business owner, I’ve tried my best to create a safe space for everyone. I speak openly about my mental health and therapy journey with clients to help them feel more comfortable and not alone. I think a lot of times we all can feel like we’re the only ones with the mental health issues, so having these open conversations really helps everyone feel less alone.
I’ve been a small business owner for 3 years now and being able to create a safe space for everyone has helped me heal. I truly love being able to provide a place where my clients can feel safe and comfortable to be themselves. If you had asked me years ago if id ever own a salon suite I would’ve said no. I think our mental health can really skew our perception of ourselves. Causing us to really question ourselves and ultimately miss out on great opportunities.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Lauren De Jesus, I’ve been a hairstylist for over 10 years. I opened Pink Daisy Hair Studio 3 years ago. Striving to create a safe space for everyone. Creating a gender neutral service menu, becoming a part of Everywhere is Queer & Strands for Trans.
Specializing in vivid colors , creative cuts, and balayage, I wanted to provide a space where I could both create fun hair and build supportive community for one another. I strive to make sure my clients feel like themselves and love their hair after each appointment.
Pink Daisy Hair Studio is meant to be a place where you can come to relax, laugh, and leave with hair that makes you feel like your authentic self. My hope is that my clients feel at home in my little space I’ve tried so hard to make feel comfortable and safe.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Never stop learning and take time for yourself. I think it’s super easy to get burnt out and feel like you’re getting left behind with all the new trends nowadays.
Especially if you’re struggling with your mental health , I’d highly suggest speaking to a therapist. Once I started I quickly realized I should’ve started sooner. Taking time for yourself and investing in self care will help with burnout and with your mental health.
Invest in continuing education, while I know it’s expensive, continuing education is a must. Even if you’re just watching videos on your phone! Anything helps you stay with the new trends and learn even more efficient ways of doing hair.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
My ideal client is someone that loves to do fun colors or cuts! I love anything super creative that is different than the “norm”. I do lots of blondes and more natural balayages too. My passion is just making people feel like their authentic selves.
