Meet Cyber Posix

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Cyber Posix. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Cyber below.

Cyber, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

When I was smaller, my family and I went to my uncles house. He had a drumset just sitting there in the corner, and me just being a curious kid decided to play it. Apparently it was enough for my uncle to pick up his bass guitar and start playing along and from then on I went into drum lessons! The piano was actually my first instrument but I didn’t like it at all and stopped all lessons, so it took a good amount of convincing my parents to let me try the drums. I loved listening to music a lot when I was a kid, whether it was Youtube videos ripped onto my MP3 player or iPod Touch, being able to be a part of that wall or drop of sound was something magical for me. My family is religious so being able to go to Sunday church services and play the drums gave me lots of world experience that I didn’t know would be ever so helpful. That’s how I found my first purpose.

Getting older and still in love with drums, I began listening more and more to electronic music; trance music, dubstep, trap, drum and bass, solo piano or guitar, and video game OSTs…there was so much for young me to explore. But even more, I wanted to create it. But I was young and not working so I couldn’t afford any music software or hardware equipment. So I searched high and low for free music production websites and software I could use to at least give form to whatever was brewing in my head. I used two websites: MusicShake and Soundation for a number of years. MusicShake used tracks and pattern blocks to create music, kind of like Ableton’s Session View but without the freedom of being able to create your own drum patterns or chord patterns or voicings. Soundation was my first ‘DAW’ in that you can create your own tracks from scratch, but the internal sounds weren’t to my liking after a while and, if I recall correctly, some sounds were locked behind paywalls, which young me couldn’t afford.

Thanks to my dad, and being in a band in high school, I was able to be exposed to my first actual music studio with professional software and hardware, and soon I installed Cubase! I wasn’t able to get a sound out of it so I uninstalled it that same night. A few days later I got a cracked version of FL Studio [which I later did get a physical copy of] and immediately I create things. The sounds were so good, the plugins so amazing, and it just felt right and intuitive. And that’s how I found my second purpose, creating music in Fl Studio.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I do a number of things under my name Cyber Posix:

1. Music Production – the main thing that I do and is what people mostly find me for. I create anything that really comes to mind; liquid drum and bass and hip hop are the main genres I create, with some room for downtempo and ambient-hip hop-esque music on the side.

I am constantly releasing music with my friends at Arden Records, and recently dropped a new project called ‘By Day, We Dream’ with ‘nights we fell in love with’ shortly before, with a feature by my long-time friend Luna Harley. I do have an album in the works as we speak, no working album yet but tracks are finished with more being added to that vault

I love drum and bass in general, but liquid is my bread and butter. I, no word of a lie, have 10 tracks completed. The problem is finding good homes or me contemplating if I want a feature on the tracks, again, with more on the way. I’ve released with numerous labels from Hospital Records to Fokuz recordings and worked with many artists as well. Though I’m not as active releasing DnB, it’s one of the many genres that got me into producing.

2. Mixing and Mastering – a small service that I do from time to time. I do pride myself in my ears and being able to layer and blend sounds and vocals together. I’ve done some work for Ocoenia, Luoe, il Westo…I usually like to keep this work reserved for close friends but if you reach out with an email, I’m usually pretty open to talking about the vision you might have for your sound, maybe even provide some musical direction if that’s something you’re interested as well.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

1. Persevere – music is one of those things that are easy to get into, but once you get into it, it can be really hard to keep yourself motivated once you reach a certain point. Your journey will not be linear, there’s no one way to do what you want to do. There’s also tons and tons of information out there, and lots of gear and plugins so it’s easy to get overwhelmed. When you’re starting, just learn what you need to get the job done, and learn as you go.

2. Experiment – one of the many ways you can stand out as a creative in general is having your own flavor, something that makes you standout or unique, providing something that only you can produce. The worst that happens is you find something you don’t like and you’re now aware you don’t like it and can now avoid it. Just ctrl-z it and keep going!

3. Have fun! – as cliche as it sounds, you’re more likely going to stop something if you’re not enjoying it. Whatever it is that drives you to create, let that be your reason for creating, and always make sure you’re enjoying the process somewhat. It’ll be fulfilling when you reach the other side!

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?

As of right now, it’s time and motivation. Between this and being an educator takes significantly more time out of my day, and out of me, that I thought it would. Dedicating certain amounts of time to certain tasks keeps other thoughts at bay, but it can be a challenge sometimes. Also making sure my schedule isn’t filled with other things and making sure if and when I have a moment of inspiration or see something that would be perfect in a song, making sure I store it in a place I can find it later for inspiration or for the basis of a track.
