Meet Sharla Baker And Jeannie Lim

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sharla Baker And Jeannie Lim. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Sharla Baker and Jeannie Lim, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?

By trying to find joy and inspiration in the every day things. We are surrounded by beauty…the clear, blue LA sky, the cotton candy sunsets, the vibrant colors of the flowers, the green of the grass and the deep blue of the Pacific Ocean.

Go to museums, musicals, movies, pop up art installations, or just a random stroll down the street and you can see great hair, and creative outfits on interesting people.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

snipcut opened its doors on September 1, 2015. Co-founded by longtime colleagues and good friends jeannie lim and sharla baker, this private hair studio is the product of these two women’s passion and love for hair, and the will and determination to get things done.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Obviously for stylists, you need a solid knowledge and foundation in actually doing hair. What makes us successful is our genuine desire and ability to connect to our clients. To make them feel seen and heard and important while in our chair, is invaluable.

For those just starting out we would say learn as much as you can, about different skills and techniques, even if that won’t be your specialty. Knowledge is key, and the ability and willingness to pivot will guide you.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

Our basis of knowledge came from our first bosses. Three women of various backgrounds and schools of education who came together to create a creative, safe and open environment in which we could learn and grow. Not only did they teach us the technical skills to do hair, but they led by example – showing us that together we can accomplish what we set out to do.

Our skills and strengths vary and are sometimes even opposite, but it lends to a true “ying yang”partnership based in mutual respect and admiration. We are more than business partners. We are ohana. And as such, we support one another in work and in life.
