Meet Joshua Escandon

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Joshua Escandon a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Joshua , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

I didn’t find my purpose in one singular moment—it’s been something I’ve had to uncover, shape, and commit to, day after day. For me, purpose isn’t static. It’s a daily rhythm, a living question I return to each morning: Who am I becoming? And how am I showing up for the people who count on me?

I’ve always felt called to serve. That’s at the core of everything I do. But the way that calling expresses itself has evolved. I grew up in a single-parent household, and that experience taught me early what grit, sacrifice, and perseverance look like. It also taught me the quiet power of presence—how being there for someone can mean more than anything else. Those values stuck with me.

When I became a father, my understanding of purpose deepened. Suddenly, I wasn’t just living for myself—I had a little boy watching me, learning from how I move through the world. I realized I had a responsibility not just to provide, but to model—what it means to be a man of character, to treat others with integrity, to work hard, and to lead with heart. That was a turning point. Purpose became something deeply personal.

That mindset followed me into my work. I run Sunset Restoration, a local roofing and exteriors company. On the surface, we fix roofs and help people navigate insurance claims. But underneath that—it’s so much more. We’re often stepping into someone’s life after a moment of chaos: a hailstorm, water damage, insurance denial. I see my role not just as a contractor, but as someone who restores stability—who helps people reclaim their sense of home, security, and peace of mind.

A home is sacred. It’s not just a structure—it’s where memories are made, where families grow, where people should feel safe. And I take it as a serious responsibility to protect that. That’s what drives me: the opportunity to do meaningful, honest work that genuinely helps people. To not just build or repair a roof—but to build trust, to serve people with excellence, and to create something lasting for them and their families.

But again—purpose, for me, isn’t a fixed point. It’s something I have to recommit to daily. That means being intentional about how I show up in my business, in my relationships, in my health, in my parenting. It’s why I train, why I read, why I reflect. Why I still believe in Ikigai—that Japanese concept of the place where passion, mission, vocation, and profession intersect. I may not have “arrived,” but I’m getting closer with each day that I choose to live aligned.

I don’t think we ever stop becoming. Every season challenges us to grow, stretch, and refine who we are. But I’ve learned that when you stay grounded in your values—when you keep showing up with intention, with humility, and with a heart to serve—your purpose becomes more than an idea. It becomes a way of life.

And that’s what I’m after.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I’m the founder of Sunset Restoration, a locally rooted roofing and exteriors company based in Colorado. On paper, we specialize in storm restoration, roofing, siding, insurance claim support, and solar integration. But at our core, we do something much more personal—we help people rebuild their lives after a storm.

My story—and the story of this company—starts with service. I’ve always been driven to help others, to create something meaningful, and to operate with integrity. After working in industries where I saw people being treated like numbers or where cutting corners was the norm, I knew I wanted to do things differently. I wanted to create a business that puts people first—where trust, education, and real care are baked into every step of the process.

Sunset Restoration exists to protect what matters most—people’s homes, their investments, and their sense of security. We show up after the storm, not just to assess damage, but to guide homeowners through a process that can feel overwhelming and frustrating. From the first inspection to the final nail, we’re there with transparency, advocacy, and expert craftsmanship. One of the things I’m most proud of is how we help clients navigate the insurance world—we don’t just take the paperwork and run; we walk with them to make sure they’re treated fairly and get what they’re owed.

What’s most exciting to me right now is our expansion into solar and energy-efficient solutions. As more homeowners look for ways to reduce their long-term energy costs and environmental footprint, we’re providing affordable, future-forward options that pair well with roof replacements—especially after storm claims. We’re also expanding our remodeling services, offering interior and exterior solutions to turn houses into homes people love even more.

At Sunset, we hold a 7-year workmanship warranty (which is rare in this industry), and we stand behind our work because we treat every project like it’s our own home. Our reputation matters to us—5-star reviews, BBB accreditation, and real relationships are the result of consistency and care.

What drives me professionally is the opportunity to build something that reflects who I am as a person: someone who believes in doing the right thing, serving others, and always growing. I’m not just building roofs—I’m building a legacy. One of integrity, impact, and human connection.

If you’re a homeowner looking for help after a storm, or someone who just wants an honest contractor they can trust, we’d love to be a part of your story. And if you’re in real estate, insurance, or property management, I’m always open to partnerships that help bring more value and trust into the industry

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

1. Resilience
Life doesn’t hand you clarity or comfort—it tests you. I grew up in a single-parent household, and early on I learned how to adapt, how to grind, and how to keep moving forward even when things felt overwhelming. That resilience carried me through fatherhood, entrepreneurship, injuries, setbacks—you name it.

Advice: Don’t run from struggle. Embrace it. Every challenge is a chance to sharpen who you are. Build habits that ground you—journaling, movement, stillness—and remind yourself daily why you’re showing up. The tough seasons will shape your character more than the easy ones ever could.

2. Emotional Intelligence & Communication
Whether you’re a father, a business owner, or a friend—how you communicate matters. I’ve learned that listening with intention, asking the right questions, and leading with empathy creates deeper trust, better relationships, and more effective leadership. In business, this shows up every time I help a homeowner navigate an insurance claim, or when I mentor someone on my team.

Advice: Get curious about people. Learn how to read not just what they say, but what they mean. Ask better questions. Seek to understand before seeking to convince. The stronger your emotional awareness, the better your results—in life, in business, and in leadership.

3. Self-Discipline & Intentionality
Nothing worthwhile happens by accident. I had to learn to be intentional with my time, my values, my energy. Whether it’s getting up to train, making time for my son, or running a business with integrity—it all comes down to daily choices. Discipline creates freedom. And for me, being intentional every day about who I’m becoming is how I stay aligned with my purpose.

Advice: Start small. Track your habits. Reflect often. Ask yourself: “Is this helping me become who I want to be?” And be honest with the answer. Don’t just set goals—set standards for how you want to show up.

If you’re just getting started, know this: you don’t have to have everything figured out. But you do need to show up every day with humility, hunger, and heart. Be patient. Keep learning. And most importantly, stay true to the kind of person you want to be—before the success comes. Because who you are is the foundation of everything you’ll build.

As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?

One of the most impactful books in my life has been Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl. It’s not just a book—it’s a mirror. It forced me to confront the question, “What is the meaning of my life?”—not in a grand, abstract sense, but in the small, daily choices I make and the way I show up in the face of adversity.

Frankl’s experience surviving the concentration camps while still finding meaning—even in suffering—taught me something I carry with me every day: that while we can’t always control our circumstances, we can choose our response. That’s power. That’s purpose.

One quote that’s stayed with me is:

“Those who have a ‘why’ to live, can bear with almost any ‘how.’”
That hit me hard—especially as a father, a business owner, and someone who’s walked through hard seasons. My “why” is clear: my son, my values, the people I serve. When I stay connected to that, I can weather anything. I don’t always have to feel motivated. I just have to stay anchored in my why.

Another idea that shaped me is Frankl’s belief that suffering ceases to be suffering when we find meaning in it. That reframed how I view struggle—not as something to avoid, but as something to learn from. In the early years of building my business, during personal setbacks, or even on days when the weight of responsibility feels heavy—that mindset gives me strength.

This book helped me internalize that purpose isn’t something we stumble upon—it’s something we create. It’s our responsibility to live with intention, to find meaning in the ordinary and the painful, and to serve something greater than ourselves.

And that’s the path I’ve chosen. Man’s Search for Meaning gave me language for what I already felt in my bones—and challenged me to live it more fully.
