Meet James Hernandez

We were lucky to catch up with James Hernandez recently and have shared our conversation below.

James , thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
Creativity comes and goes for me. Sometimes I need to take a step back and do different things besides picking up my camera. If I am looking for something interesting to pursue, grabbing a photo-book can really spark it for me. Road-trips help me go along and visualize the world to see different people when pursing photo projects or an idea that comes along in my head. Music really helps me cool down my thoughts and put things into perspective for me as a photographer.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I have some exciting photo projects that I have my mind. Right now, I have been thinking about making my first zine to sell for my street photography. I think it is time to put my images to paper and see some images that are strong but make sense. We shall see what that looks like. Also, I have been working on a project to hopefully be a strong solo exhibition soon! This might take some time, but I am proud of the progression. Both of these I am grateful and excited for; it has been an interesting but rewarding journey!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
When I look back into my career or see how far I have come, I always tell myself I should have never been so picky with opportunities or shut something out automatically. You should try everything at least once! Keep an open mind with your passion and see if it works out for you! We can always tweak our passions and add value to them. It is also important to make as many connections as possible. Remain humble and the right people will be put in your path. I truly believe that.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
Consistency is a huge motivator for me in my career and also the most important. Some days it feels like I am not doing enough or having the negativity seep into my thoughts. In this field, you have to stay consistent and always be working on your craft. It is important that I recognize and make sure I keep myself accountable for my photography and my confidence as person.
