Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lucy Ortiz. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lucy, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
My purpose didn’t arrive in a single moment, it was shaped by my lived experience, layer by layer, over many years. I first came to the U.S. on a student visa and went through every stage of the immigration journey: from uncertainty and legal complexities to eventually becoming a U.S. citizen. Having personally navigated the same system that so many of my clients face today, I developed not only an understanding of the process but a deep empathy for the people behind the paperwork.
Along the way, I realized that what many immigrants truly need isn’t just legal representation. They require someone who understands their fear, confusion, hope, and determination. They require a service that is not only technically precise, but also emotionally grounded. That’s when I decided to create something different a support system that is accessible, affordable, and most importantly, rooted in compassion.
As a licensed Immigration Assistance Provider and paralegal with years of hands-on experience, I offer services that meet people where they are: USCIS forms, certified translations, notary assistance, and free consultations. But I also provide something less tangible yet equally essential: a space where clients feel heard, not judged guided, not overwhelmed.
My clients come from all walks of life. Many are vulnerable, anxious, and carrying the weight of starting over. And because I’ve overcome personal challenges of my own, emotionally, financially, and professionally, I connect with them on a very human level. I listen to their stories, not just their cases. I sit with their pain, not just their paperwork. And in doing so, I help them not only move forward with their immigration process but also feel supported as people in transition.
That’s where my purpose comes from: to be a bridge between complicated systems and human needs, between fear and security, between surviving and thriving. This isn’t just my profession; it’s my mission.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
File USCIS, LLC is on a mission to make immigration paperwork easier, more accurate, and more honest.
We focus on providing clearly prepared USCIS forms with integrity and care, so people can move forward with confidence.
Rather than simply offering document preparation, we’re building a hybrid platform (online + offline) that immigrants can trust and access from anywhere.
Our goal is to reduce the confusion and anxiety many immigrants feel, and to create a system that anyone can follow with clarity and confidence.
Most importantly, we never give false hope or charge fees for cases we know are not viable.
At File USCIS, we are committed to honest, transparent guidance—not fear-based sales or unnecessary promises.
Lowering costs. Increasing access. Setting a new standard for people-first immigration services.
That’s the future we’re building one client at a time.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Empathy
Immigration work is personal. It’s about understanding fear, hope, and uncertainty things that don’t show up on forms.
* Advice: Learn to listen deeply and respond with care.
2. Attention to Detail
Accuracy is everything. One error can lead to delay, denial, or serious consequences.
* Advice: Build a system for checking, then double-checking.
3. Integrity
Honesty builds trust. Not every case is winnable, and saying so can be the most ethical form of support.
* Advice: Lead with truth, even when it’s hard.
*** Bonus: Creativity***
I realized I could take what I’m good at organizing, explaining, supporting, and turn it into a business that helps people.
Creativity isn’t just artistic, it’s problem-solving, solution-building, and designing better ways to serve.
* Advice: Start from your strengths, and imagine how they can solve someone else’s pain point. That’s where real value is born.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
Early in my career, I had the privilege of working with an attorney who didn’t just acknowledge my abilities, he demonstrated what true recognition looks like through action.
He once said to me,
“You’re doing more, and doing it better than most paralegals I’ve ever known.”
And it wasn’t just a compliment, it was something he backed up with meaningful support.
Bonuses were just the beginning. When I became ill and needed to visit my family in Korea, he personally purchased my flight ticket so I could be with them.
When my car lease was ending, he covered the remaining balance without hesitation.
And when I was preparing to purchase my first home, he loaned me the down payment, interest free.
This wasn’t simple workplace generosity. It was the kind of support that comes from genuine belief in a person’s potential and future.
He showed me firsthand that in a professional setting, real recognition isn’t measured by words, but by trust, opportunity, and action.
His actions gave me the courage to believe in myself and the confidence to grow beyond what I thought I was capable of.
To this day, that experience continues to shape how I support others with the same spirit of trust and genuine investment.
