Meet Abbie Marie

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Abbie Marie. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Abbie below.

Hi Abbie, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.

I don’t think imposter syndrome ever goes away. It is something I know I will be dealing with for a long time to come. It’s hard for me to accept the success that I know I deserve, but I am always working on it. I work and fight hard for what I create and the life I want to have. Being on stage and performing with my band is something that continues to bring me the most joy in my life. Continuing to have that happiness means I have to push my ego and fears aside and just do it. I have never felt that level of excitement and freedom in my life ever. Being afraid that I am not worthy of creating and being onstage is not worth never doing it again.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

Hi! My name is Abbie. I am the lead singer in Pity Party. We are a Minneapolis based indie pop rock band that is redefining nostalgia. We started as a cover band, but now we are writing original music. We are currently recording an ep and are working on an album. I am really in love with our sound. I think we are a very unique band that I haven’t seen before. Our lyrics are so human. I don’t know how else to describe it. Our music is something everyone will be able to relate to.

We have a few shows coming up in May! Check out our instagram (@pitypartytheband) for more information.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

My mom made me start playing piano when I was 5 years old. I have gone on to learn many more instruments since then. Once you know piano, it is so easy to pick up other instruments without a ton of difficulty.
My mom also made me get into theatre at the age of 3. I grew up performing on a stage. I wasn’t always professional or good, but I was constantly learning and getting comfortable with being in front of an audience.
I went to college for musical theatre and received my BFA from NDSU. I was in voice lessons, dance lessons, and acting classes all the time. I was constantly growing my craft and finding my voice. It wasn’t until last year that I tried my hand at writing music. I am so glad I did! It’s something I never thought I would be able to do. Having a background in performance has made the transition into creating music so easy for me.

I do wish I had taken more business classes. The industry now means that artists have to be so well versed in all areas. Marketing, business, creation. All of it. I feel a little lost sometimes and I know having a few business classes under my belt would help so much.

As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?

I have been making my way through “The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron. It is full of great exercises to free your mind and not let real world concerns stand in the way of you finding your voice and rediscovering your imagination. The thing I have found to be the most helpful are the morning pages. It’s 3 pages of stream of consciousness writing that is done first thing in the morning. It helps free up mental blocks and is a great way to find inspiration in the mundane. It is also a way for an artist to identify patterns in their thinking. It allows for a judgment-free space to let your mind explore. I can’t recommend it enough, truly.
